So I've heard parametric eq is better for recording. I get that, it makes sense, but how terribly important is it? I've got a ten band graphic, but on my mixer I've got sweepable mids. Can I still make a decent recording with this? I'm not able to record stuff yet, I still need a few little things.

A graphic is quick and visual but generally punches little holes in places that are neither exactly in the right spot nor the correct width. You can pull a group of them down to span a wide 'shelf' or bell' but it's a bumpy shelf using several filters where one is needed.
What was the other question?
:D

Oh yeah, sure. ;)

Recording only takes a mic, a pre and a tape deck (or DAW). Get the essentials down and then listen. Then record again. Then go back and listen to the old recordings and try to listen for what's missing (or what's there that shouldn't be).

Terrible recordings are time well spent of you take the effort to listen for and correct mechanical problems like mic placement, equipment/cable noise and mic technique etc...

Nothing in your signal chain will be more valuable than the previous recording sessions you've done and learned from.

Just get the essentials and record. Nirvana didn't hold off on recording Bleach because they had to save up for Neves and GML signal processors.

Well, you don't "need" GML and Neve units, but I'd suggest having at least one decent stereo parametric in the rack somewhere.
