hello...i've been looking into purchasing an outboard EQ box. i use a behringer ub1204 fxpro mixer and use cool edit pro and i have a couple questions about eq. first...how big of a difference is there between an old, somewhat beat-up but operable $20 eq or a new $150 rack eq...say they both have 10 bands or whatever...is there a difference, can the more expensive do that much more? secondly..is this even a beneficial purchase..if i went with the old $20 outboard eq is it going to be better than the software eq including with cool edit pro or other programs?..let me know, thank you!

I find the Cool Edit Pro EQ to be really harsh. For $20, it's worth checking out something else.

i think the big thing to consider is what kind of EQ are you talking about.
in my opinion, you'll find a parametric EQ whether it's a plugin or an outboard piece of gear to be the most musical. Any EQ that lets you sweep the frequencies will give you better results than an EQ with fixed freqs like a graphic EQ. Unless you are trying to create an effect.

I agree with jimbo, I would look into a parametric eq. For the price of a decent outboard eq, you could probably get a great software plugin, and your plugin will give you more flexibility as you will be able to use it on multiple trax at the same time. Just a thought.
