so for my home studio im trying to decide whether i should get an eq or a mic pre for when im recording guitar, bass, vocals, and my wurlitzer piano.

im using a maudio profire 2626.

i feel like having an external eq would benefit me more, since i could eq the sound for when im recording.

IMO EQing is best done in the mixing stage after all recording has been done, that way if you don't like the sound or wish to tweek the EQ you can, without having to re-record.

Er, maybe neither?

I agree with Phantom Piggy that EQ should be applied to already recorded tracks, not while tracking.

Pre amp? Frankly, the differences made by most mic pre amps are pretty subtle--and the effects typically applied in your amp or with various foot pedals are anything but subtle. I doubt a pre amp change would even be noticeable.

I know that Gear Acquisition Syndrome can have a powerful effect but, instead of coming up with two very different bits are hardware and asking which to buy, you should have a specific idea about what you want to change in your recordings and then decide what you need to buy to achieve this change. It could be anything from a new totally different microphone to better monitors to acoustic treatment in your studio.

Get the sound and signal right in the first instancee and you shouldn't need very much EQ at all.

You would get a bigger difference by getting a different Mic. but if you are already using an sm57, the Mic isn't the problem, your guitar tone is.

The guitar will never sound how it sounds to you in a room through the microphone. It's best to adjust the tone on the amp so that it sounds right in the microphone.

wow wow wow lol. its not that having problems getting good recorded sounds. i just wanted to get a warmer more analog sound.

The biggest quality bottleneck in your system is the m-audio. Even if you get a new preamp, you will still be plugging it into that interface which might not ve capable of passing the full wonderfulness of the preamp.

This statement makes me wonder. 'Warmer more analog sound'? That is a loaded question, that has many many unproductive answers. If you already have good recorded sounds, then why would you think to look for a preamp to make them more....well, warm?

^^^^This^^^^^ I'd rather try a load of different mics through a preamp i know to find what mic suits the sound "best" (and would offer the most differences in the sound), before experimenting with different pre's etc which, as many have said, would only yield very subtle differences.

Hehe....Looks like someone didn't get the answer they were hoping for. :D
