EQ/Mix Suggestions on new tune "Get It Up"?

Hey guys!

I haven't posted here in a while, but i've been tweaking the living crap out of this song trying to get a good EQ and balance going and figured I'd hit you fine people up and see what you thought. Keep in mind that i need to record real drums, so that will make a bit of difference, but for the sake of "this should be possible" I'm trying to get a good mix with what I've got now. I always feel like there some serious mud I'm not sure if it's in the vocal, guitars, bass...or a bit of everything. Any suggestions?

That's a good piece of work!

Right in the bounds of the current J Johnson/J Mraz bag..with a unique twist. All that's missing is 'da beat'. A kit with brushes or light, jazzy sticks; or a drum...played along the line of what Mraz's drummer does. Called a djembe drum or something? That'd give it some build potential, and a rhythmic drive, playing the figures in the lonely bass part.

Nice! The recording sounds great.
 
I agree with Jeff. The vocal and guitar tracks sound great. They sound strong and polished.

It just feels like it needs a building rhythm section throughout. The way it starts off quite simple and starts to build, I expected it continue building and end a bit more dramatically than it eventually does. I'm not sure if dramatic is the right word really, because I like the ending as it is. As Jeff said, a building 'rhythmic drive' is needed.

I've listened to it a few times through now though and the mix is very pleasurable to listen to.
 
JEFFMAHER: Thanks! I've always been a big fan of JJ. I only really dig a few Mraz tunes, but he's got a few killer tracks for sure. I need to get the stupid drummer to figure out what he's doing for this. I get the feeling this is going to change a lot when we get in the drums because i want to make sure those stand out nicely. My drummer also plays a wicked djembe as well. thanks for checking it out.

MATTR: Thanks for the listen! as i mentioned above, i think this will change a fair amount when we get the drums in. I guess we'll figure that all out. thanks man!
 
Very cool, very groovy.
I like the voice a lot in the verses, sounds kind of percussive. Nice funky guitar work. Wish you had it loud on both speakers though. Good song!

I'm a newbie here. Great song. Is the "mud" you're referring to possibly a result of a bass track that's too "round" in tone (as opposed to being "spikey" or thin), and maybe meshing with the kick in a strange way?
I wouldn't have even thought about it unless you pointed it out.
The first lines of the verses reminds me just a little of Billy Joel's "Keeping The Faith", but it totally departs from there. Once again, I dig the tune.
