Do you guys EQ tracks individually or only apply EQ to the whole mix? Or do you do both?

When mixing, seperate tracks are eq'ed as needed....

In the mastering process we EQ the whole mix...(also as needed)

The first thing you need to do is really listen to your mix and try to get a clear picture in your mind of what needs to be done. Once you can really hear what you'd like to fix, then you'll know whether you're going to want to EQ and how you're going to do it....or at least you'll be able to come up with a specific question.

I'm not being rude, it's just that whether people EQ and entire mix or a single track or a group of tracks...it's totally arbitrary. The answer is usually yes to every question like this! Listen first and worry about technique later.

All the above advice and suggestions are pretty good!

I would like to add that you should really strive towards getting a good mix first WITHOUT ANY EQ or Effects and see how that goes. You just might be very surprised how well the mix comes out that way. Then if you determine that you still need a bit of EQ and/or Effects you can apply them just enough to take the mix to the next level. It is almost surprising how often I grab for the freakin' EQ knob first, only to find later that I am turning it back flat later on because it starts sounding like the non eq'ed track works very well. I have recieved many emails from people that took this advice from some articles I wrote where they claimed that they started doing things that way and they felt their mixes were turning out much better. It may or may not work for you. Certainly if you think you need to EQ, then go at it. But it is prudent to see if just balancing levels will do the trick before you grab for the EQ knob

Good luck.
