Hi all, just got a used Epiphone SG 310 and would like to replace the pickups. Can anybody recomend "drop in" replacements? Thanks in advance.

I really like the Gibson 500T and 496R combination. They are Gibson's hottest pickups. I have them in 2 LP's and an SG-61. They rip without being muddy.

Thanks VP! Guess the 500T would go in the neck and the 496R in the bridge position, right?

Other way around! T stands for treble and R stands for Rhythm, just like the toggle on a Gibson.

Well.....ummm......uh.......I know that, I was just......uh...testing ya.....yup, testing.:D Thanks again!

Depends on the sound you want. For a real high-gain modern metal sound, the pickups above are state of the art. For a cleaner, more classic sound, I prefer Classic 57's. To split the difference on my old SG, I used Seymour Duncan SH-10 and SH-14 with coil taps.-Richie

check the screw holes on the G-310 to make sure pickup swapping is easy. I have a lefty G-310 and the pick ups have 2 screws on one side and one of the other. weirdest thing i've ever seen... well, most inconvenient anyway. just make sure you look it over real well first. i bought a couple pups not even considering this fact. total brain fart. :(

Thanks again for the info! Guess I'm going for the "tradtional" SG sound. I looked at Stewart MacDonald for pickups and some other parts I want to replace but will look into the Seymour's. Put some new stings on it last night and "plunked" around with it (I'm a bass player), the neck PU sounded really good but the bridge PU sounded like a ducks butt, real low output and muddy. I may just replace the bridge PU for now.

I play nothing like "modern metal" I am into "classic rock" The 500T,496R set can be very versatile, just roll down the volume on your guitar. I have an ES-335 with 57 classics and it sounds great, comparible to the 500T as far as sustain which I attribute to the sustain of the semi-hollow body anyway.
I am going to try the Gibson 498T,490R combo soon in one of my LP's. They are the hottest AlNiCo pickups Gibson makes. The 500T, 496R pickups are ceramic which gives high output without losing treble. High output AlNiCo pickups can be muddy. I used Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups for 10 years and always wanted more treble, then I bought a LP classic with the 500T and 496R and was sold.
VP;)

or save yourself some hard earned cash and get more for less at guitarfetish.com I got the highoutput paf bridge and a 10k hot rail and i'm thoroughly happy with them.
