does anybody know about how much do all the epiphone les pauls weigh?? are any of the set neck Les Paul's in the 6-7 lb range?

the epiphone ultra does look pretty good and only 5.5lbs. I have never seen them in retail shops though?

I guess I got pretty lucky. I picked up an Epiphone LP Custom, black, in a used guitar trade. It's got a few dings, and one helluva fret job. It has near perfect intonation and is stable as hell. I don't know what it weighs but it is brutal heavy. I replaced the pups with Classic 57 humbuckers and it sings! I bought a brand new Gibson LP Custom in 1972, also black (which I no longer own). For any practical purpose except selling it, the Epi is the better guitar. Guitars are made from wood by humans, and sometimes a cheaper guitar just gets built better by accident. Give a monkey a typewriter, and he's bound to spell a word. In this case, I suspect some underpaid luthier at Samick just cranked out a real gem. I'll keep my no-respect Les Paul, thank you.-Richie

Just currious, why the search for the slim Lester. At that weight you'd almost want to call it a Leslie. Almost seems like an oxymoron... a light weight LP.

For sure, a hollow body if ultr-light is what you're after. Is it the body style you're after or is it a particular sound. Like I said, just currious is all.

i like the sound and shape of the Les Pauls, but i'm just lookin for something not too heavy. I've had a bad back for a few years. I have a Tele that leaves me pretty sore after playing for a while and thats about 8 lbs. I got an Ibanez hollow body thats 7 lbs and I seem to do ok with that. I guess the extra pound is the straw that broke the camel's back for me

In general

A Les Paul is going to weigh more than a Tele.

A Tele is around 8 lbs, an LP in the 9-10 range.

Epis could be less due to a thinner, or in some models, non-existent maple cap.

I have played n Ultra, though not plugged in. It felt great! Not only is it light, it has a really nice belly cut that's just super-comfortable to me.

One thnig to point out, though, is that a good chunk of the legendary LP sound is due to the mass of wood behind it. Historically, the more desirable ones are the heavier ones.

Just something to think about.

Do you play standing up?
Try a sitting down,or a barstool if you play live.

Those Flys are light guitars.

I was thinking the same thing as well.

I assure you, my Epi is *not* light. But I do love it. Fortunately, I switch back and forth between electric and acoustic, playing mostly acoustic, so I don't have to take it for 3 hours. In the studio, I just sit down. I know you're looking at Les Pauls modeled after the LP studio, which are much lighter. In my mind, they're not really LP's, more of a deformed SG. My conclusion- a Les Paul is desirable *because* it's heavy. Mass creating sustain. If you want a lighter Gibson solid body with humbuckers, consider an SG. For my purposes, mostly clean, I prefer P90's, and mostly use a Casino and the LP on stage. The LP is my go-to guitar when I want humbuckers. That's just the nature of my material. Best of luck in your guitar hunt. Spending money can be fun.-Richie

Forgot to mention, I have an Epi LP and a Gibby...they weigh about the same. I should say there's not noticable difference. The word "light" could not be used when describing either.

I had an SG-special which was much lighter but I could never get used to the center of gravity on the thing. The neck seemed too heavy for the body or something...I donno. It sounded great but just didn't seem to fit me.

The SG will give you a similar sound and be lighter. They are a little hard to get used to, your neck will take a dive everytime you let go of it cause its heavier than the body. Also some people hate the strap button on the SG (behind the horn, not on the side).

so i decided to go with the Epi les paul. After playing with it for while at the store, i decided to take it home. It felt pretty good actually and too heavy. I think my tele feels heavier. The action seems a tad bit high for my taste especially in the treble strings, but still plays well. Any advice on a good string gauge/action height combo that will work well for players like me that like the lowest action possible? thanks

Now you opened the whole can :)

The strings are going to be a matter of personal taste. I like super slinkies. Once you've settled on a gauge of strings, take it to a tech for a proper set up. That's the best I've got.
