Anyone played those guitars?

I heard some really good things about them, and then again some bad things as well...

Any opinion on them is welcome :)

Thx,

Swoon

if its all you can afford then fine but the reality about that company is 1969 was their last respectable year of production
look on ebay for cool used 60,s solid body epi they turn up many times for under 500 bucks why would you bother with the asian equiv when you can still have a fine us instrument for resonable dollars still?

True..

I usually play a Vigier Excalibur, which I'm very pleased with.
But I wanted to have a model with dual humbucker set up to test with (just to have it around when I need some humbucker sound). So.. not going to spend lots of $$$ on it.

About ebay, I agree. But I'm living in Belgium. Most people don't ship internationally. Especialy not guitars :)

And the goths look sweet imo :D

Don't be discouraged by Trebles reply. A close friend recently suffered a fire in his home, and all his instruments were burned. When the insurance check came to replace his guitars, he and I underwent a serious comparison of the Epiphone and Gibson electric guitars with a local electrician and guitar player. While there was a difference in the tone, the Ephiphone held its place right next to the Gibson- they biggest difference was the gauge of wire they used- which is easily changable.

My friend ended up buying a Ephiphone Les Paul Custom and a AlleyKat for the price it would have cost for a low model Gibson.

I dont know anything about the Gothic series, but dont feel that Epiphone makes crummy guitars, because they dont.

I think he would have been discouraged had he gone ahead and wasted his hard eard earned dollars on something he could have avoided long term this gothic model will have firewood resale value where the guitars ive sugested are dark horses and are on the rise over the last few years some food for thought chris:)

at worst if you must own one of the current crop at least buy one cheap from ebay dont waste your money upfront at a store

If you can avoid spending for a while here is a luthier in france who makes the real deal dont be too impatient and you will get yourself a real gem from this guy just hold your dollars a little longer from about1100 to 1500 us dollars you will get something you wont want to resell do yourself the favour and check out a real guitar

well... buying an epi off of ebay isn';t without risk... in the shop you can compare ten and pick the best... however, you might wanna look out for rare gibsons... i got myse;f an ALL black gibson SG-I 24 fret for about 400 dollars!

tookl some time though...

and those french guitars are DAMN UGLY!!! ugh!

ditto, none of them appeal to me, although i bet they sound fantastic. still, i couldn't make myself buy something so ugly imo.

Also,

The Epi Gothics do not have the maple top of the Gibson Gothics. The difference will affect your tone.

Also, if you are considering used, keep in mind the original Epi Goths didn't have mahogany bodies.

I guess taste differs from person to person I own and have owned alot of the guitars over the years most of then vintage stratocasters and Epiphones made before 1 9 6 9

I feel i do know the differences in tonal quality and know if you are trying to compare guitars from different eras some things may remain the same but on closer inspection into the finer points of any instrument you soon realise the differences in some cases they the differences stick out like a sore thumb

anyway im not here to debate this i know better then to waste time trying

In the end let your pocket and ears tell you what you like ahead of just a paint job or some other less important factor

and as butt ugly guitars go first sight isnt always what it seems i,ll let you work that one out if can ??

I'm curious about the quality of todays Epiphones vs earlier versions. I purchased my Epiphone SheratonII about 15 years ago and I know it is a solid built, excellent sounding instrument of very high quality and I spent $250.00 at the time. I used to think Fender was the answer but they make a very cheap quality product having purchased a 12 string that had chrome powder-coat / nylon core cheap ass tuning pegs that could not withstand a fall to a plush carpet. This unit cost much more than my Epi and was purchased only a few years after I bought the Epi. I realize Fender isn't the issue here but I also wonder if Epi may or may not have cheapened up a bit on quality. I like the idea of buying an Epi Les Paul that looks like it came off the same production line as the Gibson Les Paul only the graphics on the headstock were changed. this is not an uncommon marketing strategy.

Well maybe not a Les Paul back in the 60,s But epiphone did make a number of wonderfull solid body electric guitars which were made on the same benches and of the same woods and by the same luthiers or back then hired workers not everyone who worked those factories in kalamazoo was a luthier

there were also many others who were just finishers anyway heres a link check out some of these epiphones then start searching because alot of these gems wont stay cheap forever just like other vintage guitars these guitars are headed for a sharp increase before too long dig out the gold before its all gone
