envelopes

I'm still confused on exactly what envelopes are and what application I would use them for. Thanks

You have to go to View/Enable Envelopes or something like that to activate them. I use the Pan & Volume envelopes all the time. You can set the volume and the pan with the controls at the left end of the track, but as far as I know that doesn't allow you to adjust, say, the volume during the duration of the track. To do that you have to go to Edit View and adjust the levels via the Effects/Amplitude/Amplitude sequence, or you can use the envelopes in Multitrack View. With envelope editing activated, highlight the track you want to adjust the volume for and click on the yellow line at the top of the track. A little hand will appear and a white button on the line. You click & drag on the button with the hand to move the volume up or down. Note that it starts with the volume all the way up, so you have to raise the overall volume of the track, then lower the envelope to be able to raise the volume. A little practice will show you how this works. The pan envelope is the light blue line in the middle of the track and moving it up pans toward the left and down, to the right. Neither of these volume envelope changes will be reflected in the numbers displayed in the "Vol-Pan" windows, BTW. One example I used the Pan Envelope for recently was a recording where sound effects were supposed to appear from behind the vocals and move over to the side. I started with the blue line centered, then clicked on it to make a handle appear, then clicked again where I wanted the panning to stop and dragged the line to the side. Hope this helps.

oh ok, I've been doing that the whole time, I use it a heck of a lot. I helps when you want to bring parts of a track down, or the pan like you said. I just didn't know that that was what I was doing. Thanks for the time.
