I have just purchased a dell (it was a good deal, OK) P4 2.4 with a gig of ram to use explicitly for home recording. I'm trying to decide on what sound card to use hoping to spend under $300.

A few people have suggested Echo and M-audio cards and I was looking for some advice on what to buy.

Thanks!

Is a breakout box necessary in the system? I have a 6 channel mixer already and I figured I could just hook that directly in. What other benefits will the box give me?

The Echo MiaMIDI Rocks!!

I would also suggest that you take a look at the new Echo MiaMIDI. I helped a vocalist friend of mine install his today and help him figure out how to use it (you know how vocalists can be :)), ...all without looking at the manuals, which were in .PDF form and he doesn't have acrobat reader installed yet.

Long story short: This card Rocks!! It was super-easy to install (using the latest driver set I downloaded for him), and worked seamlessly with Sonar and SoundForge. Sounded great both recording and monitoring tracks ...much easier to install than my Aardvark DP 2496! We didn't even have to read any manuals to figure out the Echo control manager thing...

The only problem we stumbled upon was how to plug his multimedia speakers (1/8" stereo jack) into the MiaMIDI, which has 2 balanced (mono) 1/4" outputs. We ended up having to get 2 *STEREO* 1/4" to 1/8" adapters, and a stereo "Y" splitter to make it work, but it was a quick and easy fix!

We picked it up at Guitar Satan for $169.00 (US), as they were willing to match the lowest price I found on the net. (hint: be sure to take a printed copy of the web page with you when you try to do this!)

Check out the specs on the card (not bad for the price!):

Soundcard Midi effects

On sound card specs what part identifies effects that you can
add to midi tracks. I'm having problems identifying that. My main
thing is maybe adding a little reverb to drums and to keyboard synth sounds on the midi. Bob
