Ensuring best sound quality in final output.

I have Mixcraft 6 and I love it- only $75. I have good mics and external preamps but i guess there are better effects i can use. eq, compression, reverb, etc.


I have to know if i am getting the best sounding end product. I know skill is more important but i guess quality equip. helps also.
Is there aplug-in software or external hardware that is a worthwhile investment? there IS an upgrade to Mixcraft 6 pro studio ( total price is $150)

In a way, I guess i'm also asking if you can tweak a gargeband/mixcraft vocal/acoustic guitar as well as a protools/ableton/logic recording.

You have to start with good sound IN to your DAW. "You can't polish a turd" as is said frequently here!
 
I do have very good mics Bock 195 and AKG 414 XLS into a Universal Audio 610 so good effects must count for something. I just want to know if there is a good ( hopefully cheap) way to improve the mix.

look to professional recording studios to help you decide the BEST setup.

they will have it.


at the very least, take a poll, and narrow it down.


the sound you have, is the sum of the whole.....
including the downgrade from your WEAKEST link.

good mics, thru crappy cables........?

good mics, thru crappy preamps.......?

untreated rooms to record in......?

not up-to-snuff analog to digital convertors......?


it's a lot more than just the daw
 
How do your mix sound right now?


Dude, I'm using Garageband atm. I can get a pretty decent mix with it. I've used Pro Tools, Cubase, Digital Performer, Reason (still use it), Logic, Sonar, Ableton.


I just really like how incredibly simple Garageband is. i don't really need a powerful DAW atm.
 
And in terms of sound quality, the DAW makes no difference. Different DAWs may have different equations in how they record sound, but the difference in sound is so minute, no one can tell the difference between a dry track on Garageband or Pro Tools.


I'm assuming you mean the plug-ins and editing may be different. Pro Tools does NOT sound better on its own. It's really the right use of plugins and using them correctly.

ultimately, i don't believe it matters, what the daw sounds like, by itself, with raw tracks.


all that really matters, in the end, is the quality of the plugs you use (or hardware) to edit the final mixes, and your mix decisions using the gear/software at hand.
