encoding questions

New member
being new to mp3 I've some rather technical, (to me anyway), questions
1. whats the best bitrare to use when encoding , I can encode from about 16kb/sec up 320kb/sec, I know that the higher bitrate make a better sounding mp3 but whats the standard bitrate for internet use?
2.whats the diference between lame and blade encoding, when i use either of these they both sound very similar to my ears?

The higher the bitrate,the more detail in the music,but will produce larger file sizes and longer downloads.Check out the new windows streaming format .asf.Less than half the file size per tune at comparable fidelity and IT STREAMS.Here's a sample

Lame is the favorite MP3 codec at the moment,followed by Fraunhoffer with Blade a distant third.

The standard mp3 bitrate is 128kbps. If you want to post to MP3.COM or other hosting sites, they'll have to be at 128.

128 is still kinda mushy though, and you can improve things cosiderably by hopping up to 192kbps without having a really HUGE file. Then 256kbps and higher is of exceptional quality, but the file sizes become anoying to those on modem or other slow connections.

I would personally suggest avoiding the Blade encoder. It's crap at 128kbps. I'd recommend SCMPX over Blade for a free encoder any day. If you can't hear the difference...start paying attention to things like cymbals...you'll hear a "whoosy" sound. Once you hear that...other things will start popping out at you.
