Greetings,

My EMU 1820 has finally kicked the bucket. I'm using Sonar 4 currently on Dell Dimension 8400. I was quite happy with the EMU however do not want to replace it with another one because the product isn't supported anymore and their customer service SUCKS!

Anyone have any suggestions for a comparable or BETTER product.

Absolutely, take a look at this http://www.sonarvstudio.com/100/index.php.
This is probably my next step as I love both Cakewalk and Roland. It's basically a Roland BR recorder, which makes it portable so you can take it to gigs: plus it's paired with Sonar VS Studio (product specific version of Sonar 8). Just check out the link. It will give you more info than I can.
My only gripe would be that there is no fiber optic i/o.
Hope this helps.

There are lots and lots of options for you, but all dependent upon your budget.. what are you looking to spend? Do you have firewire, or is your system strictly pci/pcie?

I had checked out the vstudio100. Was curious if it really did what cakewalk says it does. I'm impressed so far. I need pci rather than FireWire.

Budget. Always an important option. Well, I think I am nearing the time to be making the big leap from sonar and a pc environment to logic, pro tools and a mac environment so I don't want to invest too much more on the pc system but i can't use a totally crappy card and breakout box because I have existing projects to complete prior to making the switch.

Found an rme multiface. Had researched those previously. So far it looks to be my favorite option. Anyone have any input on those cards and boxes?

I have a E-MU 0404 and I have been planning the upgrade to the 1616. In January they announced a PCI Express versions of there 1616M and that's what I'm planning on getting (Link to article.) It was supposed to be out this Spring, but I still haven't seen anything. Here is another great looking card that I have been considering: The ESP1010e. If you're holding out for PCI I would hold out just a little bit longer for a PCIe. In the E-MU article above they brag that data transfer is 4 times faster than standard PCI version. Of course a long with a big release like this will be some much needed driver updates. Those are two cards you might want to look into. Sorry to hear about the death of your 1820.

Forgot to mention I don't wat another e-mu product. Loved the 1820but that 1616 is like an 1820 lite. Not sure why they stopped making 1820 biut I've had it with the proprietary edi cable.

So to revise my statement. My emu 1820 hasn't died. It and pci1010 card work great. The edi cable died. Again. Within a year of the last one and I am tired of fighting. Support is next to nothing since company was sold and until they decide what to do with existing emu customers and product line going forward I'm done. Already lost my warranty tech support after sale. Not cool.

UPDATE: RME Multiface purchased & installed

Just wanted to provide closure to my post. I went with the RME Multiface and it has surpassed my expectations. Installation was simple, it integrated / updated flawlessly with Sonar 4 and the sound is far better than the EMU 1820. It's crisp and warm, sounds quite analog. The PCI Hammerfall PCI card is a beast my CPU is happy.

I did make a small error in the purchase not realizing it does not have mic pre. BUT, the sound is so damn good, i'll just purchase a small mic pre unit and call it a day. Any suggestions on compatible gear would be appreciated.

Thanks all in advance for your assistance. Happy recording.
