Yup!!!

Tha bastards are doing it. Just as we all thought they would when they bought Emagic. Apple has come out with "Soundtracks". It is a scaled back version of Emagic so that mom and dad can add shitty loops over their even shittier home videos.

So now we can hear a little slide whistle go Wherrrrrrrrrr-uuup when little Sally's skirt flys up on her way to her first communion.

I mean I am not bitter or anything. I could give a shit what Emapple does with their code as long as they don't start selling ME bad shit. It does sort of take a notch out of my side though. Sort of like if you buy a nice Jaguar with a nice engine, leather interior, and all that stuff. And then a few months later Jaguar starts selling a scaled down version of that car for 1/4 of the price. It just sort of cheapens the whole institution of Jaguar. Ya know?

Am I alone on this one?

Emagic would never create something with an interface as intuitive looking as Soundtracks. Looks more like an Acid ripoff to me.

Is Apple trying to become the sole developer for its operating system?

Of course!

Its the logical next step to controlling their hardware in the way they do...

You mean a Ford taurus? :)

I don't mind Emagic/Apple getting on the market with scaled-down versions of their software. After all: Logic, for instance, is not a status symbol like a Jaguar. Its sole purpose is to do a job (unlike a prestigous car). If the new cheapo products help Apple/Emagic make profit, I figure (at least: hope) that we will all benefit from it (think about more financial resources for development, etc). Just my $0.02.

Here's an example: the German car maker BMW would not be in business anymore without their relatively inexpensive 3-series cars. That's how they can financially survife and bring us awesome cars like the 7 and 8 series.

P.S.: I think the "status symbol argument" only works for ProTools (the "Neumann" of the recording software). If you have a pro studio, you need to run ProTools just because customers expect that. It doesn't imply that ProTools is any better than Logic or Cubase, etc. The simple fact that you run ProTools distinguishes your studio -- just like driving to a customer in a Jaguar.

ProTools LE might already be a step in the wrong direction IMHO. If anyone (like me) can get a Digi 001 with ProTools LE, ProTools can't be anything special, can it? But then again: does the company care as long as they are making big profit? I doubt it.

One step closer to the final goal: "iAudio," an app that fully integrates everything about your Mac, and creates music for you with couple of clicks. I imagine they will still provide Logic (see iMovie/Final Cut) as some sort of high end solution, though to fit Apple's user interaction specs, it's going to have to be redesigned to be much easier and prettier, from the ground up.
