Eliminating frequencies... help!

Hello, oh wise ones

I'm having a bit of trouble on a mix of mine, and I believe it's being caused by sub-harmonic rumble. When analyzing the frequencies in the mixdown, I'm getting about -72db to -50db from 40hz down... even around 20hz, I'm well above -72db. I thinks it's adding too much to the mix, not allowing me to increase volume in the mastering...

So, I've tried EQing it out, but to no avail. I've used a 30 band EQ and cut everything below 40hz only to find that the volume levels in those frequencies change very little at all. Should I set up a chain of EQ's to cut below the 40hz line?

Is there a better way to eliminate the troublesome frequencies?

You need a high pass filter. Set it at around 70hz to 100hz. 40hz is too low, EQ doesn't work the way you think it does. It is more of a gradual dropoff, if you set it for 40hz, you are only going to be 6db down at 20hz. Using graphic EQs for this is kind of pointless.

Instead of attacking it by frequency, you can try it by volume with an expander.
