Hi everyone,
My name is Mega and my hobby is playing music and singing. What I need from you is to tell me if there is musical equipment that is able to:
- eliminate original singer's voice from any CD ot MP3 no exception, then
- record my voice over it with background music from the above resullt, then
- create a CD with me as the singer replacing the original artis's voice.
- I can do it at home.

I could use Karaoke but many times I can't find the song I like.
I've tried computer software, none of them were good because I can still here the original artist'd voice on the background and the end result quality is not that good.

try a freeware called BESTPRACTICE
It has a "karaoke" function. Youcan adjust the settings, too
Can also alter the KEY without changing the pitch (speed)
Can alter the SPEED without affecting the KEY

Why?

This splits up in two parts: "why is BestPractice made?" and "why would I use it?"
To start with the first: I saw that there were programs available on the internet that do this, and you have to pay for them ($20 to $50). Since I thought: 'I can do that', I had to prove it, right?

And for part two - well, there are probably more reasons, but those I can think of are:

Your favorite musician plays a solo that you want to study, but you can't figure it out on normal speed
You'd like to transcribe music, but need to slow it down to hear it right
You can tune the song to your instrument instead of the other way around
You'd like to sing along, but you need to change the key to match your voice
You're learning a foreign language and you'd like to slow down the spoken examples
You're like me and like to fool around with audio and/or digital signal processing

Unfortunately, even though you can try and filter out the vocals with different freq etc, there is no way of removing them unless you have the original recordings.

It's kind of like baking a cake and then trying to remove the eggs.. impossible.

The programme above however will let you do everything else like Johnny said.

Good luck,

Hi johnnymegabyte thanks for responding and referring me to BestPractise.
I read about this software from its website but I did not get the detail. I'm wondering if this software can do all i want to do, that is, eliminate the original artis's voice, insert my voice and create a CD/MP3 file.

Have you tried it?

Thanks,
Mega

It can't be done. Vocals may get quieter but they will still be there. Not to mention the rest of what remains will sound like crap.

Voice Eliminator

I found this equipment (not software). If you hear the demo, you'll be surprise with the result. It sounds incredible!
The negative side on this is, it doesn't garanty will work with any CD. It is described in detail on the website. In addition, it is too expensive to try.

Works quite well, and like i say, on the same basis of finding the frequency of the vocals and lowering them. This totally depends on the style of song you'll be removing the vocals from however.. If your vox are around the same freq as anything else in the track, then this hardware will remove that aswell as there is no way of picking out just the vox and lowering it.

Sure, it sounds incredible if you like music that has no kick drum or bass guitar in it.

Funny thing. I get Sweetwater's GEARNet weekly e-mail and they always give a link to some free plugin. Some are really cool and some aren't. This week's plugin is called "Voice Trap." I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but you might give it a shot. The free demo doesn't let you adjust parameters, but may work ok: http://www.cloneensemble.com/vt_main.htm

I listened to their samples and they don't excite me enough. Too many artifacts are created. I think you're just best sticking with the ol' phase trick. I've have the best luck with a combination of phase subtraction and filters/delays.

Of course, the way the song was mixed will determine how well it can be done.

No Recording, BESTPRACTICE is just playback. Great for guitar players to play along with CD's, MP3's.
The karaoke feature works depending on the original mix. As a few other comments, anything CENTER channel will get dropped.

Now for recording, you can use a recorder program and capture the Mixed Output, which would include you and the CD/MP3.
