just wondering, when recording electric guitars. are you supposed to put a micophone by the amplifier, and record that way, or is the best way to just put the guitar into the mixer and preamp, and record that way and add effects with the recording software on the computer ? :)
 
Mic the Amp. Better sound guaranteed. DI'd guitar will sound weak, primarily because your mixer pre-amp won't be up to the same quality as your Amplifiers pre. The thing about going straight in, or even taking a line out from the back of your amp, is that you cut out the vital component that is your speaker. Definetely mic your amp, a good dynamic mic off axis a few inches back from the speaker.
 
Pretty much what tele said - & play around with mic placement to get the sound YOU want.
 
While both methods will work, i have to agree with the others and say mic the amp. You can still add efx later if you feel something more is needed. It takes a little experimentation to find the right amp settings and mic placement but it is worth the trouble.
