Last night I put on some new electric strings and recorded this. as you can hear, they have a nice bang to em'.

however, just 24 hours later, I went to record again, and the strings have completely lost the tone/bang. these are Earnie Ball "Regular Slinky"'s 10/13/17/26/36/46

Recommendations?? :)

I hate dem slinkys....

I recently discovered RotoRed strings by RotoSound. I use .11's, and they are bright yet round sounding, and they last well. Roto is mostly known for bass strings, but I'm a convert after years of Dean Markley's.

I like S.I.T. I know they're a "cheaper" brand, I've tried a lot of different brands and IMO there's better than most.

They hold up really well, and they sound good. I almost NEVER have to replace strings. (I play very aggresive and I use .10's) They are definately worth atleast trying. :)

GHS Boomers. In my experience, they have the longest life span of any strings I've used. I swear by them.

I actually quite like Gibson Britewires. They're vacuum packed so at least my spares don't go rusty in my guitar case. :)

Would like to try Boomers sometime soon.

a second vote for boomers.

ghs makes good stuff, been using them for years now.

if the store is out, d'adario's hold up good too.

later...

I've been using the Rogue (S.I.T. same thing) "singles" sets from Musicians Friend for at least 7-8 years now. I tune to dropped C and I like heavy strings so I get a custom 13-54 set from them.

You get each string gauge as a pack of 12 and they are loosely coiled in a big box when you get them.

When I was tuned to regular pitch, I always used D'Addario 11's.

The best thing you can do to keep your strings sounding fresh is to wash your hands with soap before you play and to wipe down your strings after you play. I also hear that Finger Ease lubricant protects strings from grime and corrosion, but I can't attest to that ability personally eventhough I use Finger Ease anyway just for the lubrication it provides.

The grime on my strings always seems to build up underneath for some reason. If I run my fingers under the strings and pull up some gunk, at the least I need to Finger Ease and "pull" each string from headstock to bridge with a cloth to get all the shit off of it. Either that or I say "fuck it" and change strings at that point, dependent on my level of laziness obviously. :)

Check out Snake Oils. You can email the owner with questions.

I used Elixirs quite a bit. You give up a little tone compared to brand new, but they don't change over time.

3rd vote for GHS boomers. I had D'adarios on my electrics and they were just way too twangy. I switched them to boomers several months ago and still haven't had to change the strings.

What guitar are you using?

I agree with allot that was posted here. I always wipe down the strings and fret board after I play, even if it's only for 30 seconds.

I vacuum pack my strings after I purchase them. Since I live in Florida, you kind of have to. But when I did not vacuum pack them, I did notice a wear to the strings before I even put them on. I could not tell if it was a slight rust or oxidation.

I will add my $02. on string recommendations after you tell us what guitar you are using.

It's a washburn lyon series guitar, got it like uhm, 8 or 9 years ago? lol.

I've been a Boomer guy for so long now I can't comment on other strings.

Dammit!

I swear by em too :D

I use Dean Markley Jazz set. They last a good long time. Years ago, when I used to play 60 - 70 hrs a week, I would use gauze moistened with denatured alcohol to wipe each sring. This increased the useable life significantly. I still had to change stings at least twice a week though. 20 hrs is about the maximum life . If you are recording you should change your strings frequently because fret ware on the bottom of the string alters the harmonic ballance of the string.

The best string I ever used was D'Angelical Electric Gold Flat Wounds. They are no longer produced.

D'Addario EXP phosphor bronze strings last forever and keep a great sound for like 3-4 times as long as most other's I've used. I do tend to beat up my guitar a bit and they've never actually broke. I just change them every fwe months.
The luthier guy who sorts my guitars recomended Maxima Golds to me - supposedly last forever and never lose any tone. I think they've changed name now. Never tried them myself though.

Another vote for the GHS.

I favor them over the Elixirs for the electric guitar.

I tried Elixirs once and they sounded good but died after 2 weeks. Good if you change them that regularly I suppose.
