Greetings to all of you fine folks of the HomeRecording community.
I am Lucius of Illumination Corner, a humble project studio. I enjoy mixing.
This song I wish to share is the result of a free recording and mix session. I mastered it myself(i know, i know), but didn't try to strangle too much out of it. I am trying to maximize efficiency throughout the stages of the session and keeping these sessions within a relatively short time constraint. My limit was 10 hours on the mix. Here's what I got out of these fine musicians!

Total session time was about 22 hours. 10+hours tracking, 10+ mixing, and 1+ mastering. A small handful of edits were made prior to mixing. also, i fuckin love dynamics, so I'm not pushing the master too hard. crank it.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated I have plans to put together a compilation of local artists.

I'm digging this. Different and energetic.

I can't comment on the mix because I'm at work and these little PC speakers are distorting no matter what I listen to. But the song sounds full, and this sounds like itwas fun to do. Girl's got a high range and sings very well.

I think it sounds great...if anything Id say the vocals could come up a little, when its all in full swing they get lost a bit...but overall I like it and nice performance too, I would listen to stuff like this quite happily

This girl definitely has a good handle at what she's doing. She's a youngin! Turned 17 the day of the session This was her first legitimate recording experience as up until that point the band had only recorded on an iPhone

I agree with the vocal's needing a little bump up. After I mastered it exactly that stood out to me in the busy sections. I had a quick moment but I got through it lol.

The mix is full and warm, has nice panning and clarity. I'm listening on bose bookshelf speakers with a sub...not the best, but I'm used to them.

I thought maybe the snare was a little duller sounding than I might like for this. Maybe bring back a little more snap or crack to it? I dunno, this may be exactly how you want it and it certainly doesn't sound bad at all. Really good performances and a great mix.

I didn't do a whole lot to the snare, lil bit o eq, lil bit o comp. Having been away from the mix for a few days, I agree the snare could have more snap n crackle. Honestly, because of her range, I was afraid adding anything to the bite of the snare would make the vocals less focal. Also, before I hit the master, I dropped the vocals a tad lol. Her range seemed to attribute more momentary loudness than what was really there. I'll definitely keep these things in mind for the next session.

As far as the performances go, I hardly touched any of the instruments for editing. Lined up like half of the beginning of two vocal sections. the bass had the majority of edits, which were few. These musicians were mafakin prepared for this session. I was blown away. drums were one take. ONE! I'M TOTALLY SUPER SERIAL. It took more time to setup and check levels than it did to track the song. Did someone say, "in-house/session drummer much?"

I agree with most of the comments. I like the mix, love the tune, I think her awesome voice can come up a bit and maybe the drums too, but I always want drums louder, so take that for what it's worth.

Does it seem a little heavy on the left to anyone? It seems a little that way to me. Like there's more low end on the left and more high end on the right. Little weird on headphones.

Thanks for the input! I know what you mean about the left being heavier. There are 3 guitarists in this band, and I felt like I was taking a chance panning the "lead" guitarist to the left. The rhythmic guitar in the middle just didnt sit right to the sides.
The gtr on the left was a tele running thru a little vox digi amp. Mid gtr was ibanez artcore thru FM212, Right gtr was strat thru another FM212. Perhaps that can demystify (o0o0o) the timbral balance between the gitz.
I wouldn't say the extra low end to the left was entirely intentional, but the panning was.
i just feel like the middle is almost always where one would expect the "action," so I tried out pushing it out of the way a bit.
I remember hearing something about writing music... write through what is unexpected as opposed to the expected. or something to that degree. So I took that to the control room. And that concludes my folger's-coffee-moment story. Part 2.
