I see deaf people
right so I think its better mix than the first track but worse than my second track (a fluke)

my conclusion is that I will only record software/midi instruments from now on lol :)

Is there too much plosions or sybillence to get away with the vocals?

Had to add the vocals with headphones so not sure of levels..any advice much appreciated..I know you guys are good for it ;)

thanks to anyone who listens

Edit: dumped a load of the compression and pulled them faders back, big improvement..I am noticing that I have to work on the vocals as they sound like daffy duck at parts

thanks guys keep it coming..you all really help

Those cymbals/hats are deathly shrill. The whole mix has a shrill, over-compressed feel to it. Very harsh on the old ears. What are you monitoring through?

Yeah, it seems you're pushing the limits of compression. Throw down your fader a little and make a quieter mix. Then you can control the overall volume with a Master fader.

Now, on the mix, it seems there's a lot of things going on. The hi-hat sound its to harshy for my taste, maybe that's the problem with your mix. Try using another sample. remeber also that your vocals must be the center of attention. You have the hi-hat at the same volume than the vocalist.

Hope it helps.

thanks...yeah the drums are too much and I tend to over compress everything when it doesn't sound right to me...I think Ill go back straight away and start clicking the "off" button

Compression only makes things worse than they are. Think about salt, put too much on your food and the taste will be horrible. Apply compression wisely, just to tame peaks on snare and bass drum. I barely use it and try that it sounds unnoticeable to the human ears.

Best compression you can do is throw down your faders ;) BTW, asumming you're using MIDI drums, they don't need too much tweaking.

already at it..damn this is the stuff I suck at...still early days (I'll be saying that for years) :)

The song idea is brilliant, Keith, reminds of that 80's electronic sound (I tend to listen to musical content first and recording technique later.....:D)
What I find is that the arrangement needs a bit of dynamic. You've got all your synths going the whole time. In the verses I would quieten them down a little and explode in the chorus, keeping the listener interested. The guys already mentioned about tracking too hot, I would take that advice and leave enough breathing space. The stuff with the drums is nothing you can't fix, just takes some patience. They shouldn't sound real for this style IMHO. What drum programme do you use? Your tunes have a nice musical content so don't ever give up!;)

Joey :):):):)

Cheers Joey you're a good lad :)

Im using ableton with a pack from puremagnetic for the drums..

Ive already had another fiddle..my problem is I can very rarely record vocals here so by the time I get round to it I overcooked the track already by fiddling about for days! lol

I think it need another synth or something coming in..I agree it all seem to be the one level trudging along at the same pace just now..

the drums were meant to be soldiers marching..the bass started when there was a western on tv in the background..yanno rain dancing.. weirdo ;)

i know when ive just not got a clue I drop it in here then bingo straight away..compression...some instruments were going through three compressors by the end of it < cuckoo >

:D

on Behri monitors now (I know shhht) and its beginning to sound better..had a go with the cymbals and they seem more in line...

might do a version with acoustic drums to see how that works would you give it a listen?

Ha, ha, yeah, one does tend to get carried away with all the plugs available....my first mixes would have made even Adolf Hitler cry.....:D
Whenever I've used synths (and that's not too many times....) I've never felt the need to use a compresser on the single instrument. To me synth sounds are already "ready" and don't need processing, but I'm not that experienced with them. You know, regarding the dynamics thing, take an example from The Human League, you'll hear what I meant. At times the verses are just bass, drums and one synth or just some little background sounds.

:)

funny thing is I've been listening to "Dare" recently...you are right..its like the bare minimum at points..this was/is my attempt at a "rockin" tune..I don't think I'm really cut out for it but that's no bad thing mate haha

This is a pretty cool song, I like it. It started out making me think of earlier Dandy Warhols, but not so much with the vocal style.

I think that hi-hat during the verses is a bit too "noticeable" at times. I would have liked it to just "be there" without drawing attention to itself.

The vocal performance is cool and suits the song extremely well, but there's something about the vocal sound that I can't put my finger on. On second listen, I guess I'm wishing it was a bit more out front and a tad brighter.

Cheers
Matt

Thanks Matt...I'm a bit of a one take wonder and I was practically spitting into the mic then tried to throw everything at them to fix it..I think re-doing them would be the best idea but I'm glad you like it overall :)

Im a bit of a nightmare when it comes down to recording my ideas haha..

thanks or listening dude and commenting, much appreciated

cheers Greg..Im going to re-do the vocals and add acoustic drums..

I'll be very, very, very careful with the cymbals ;)
