is it better to use external effect units or to use the one's within your software ?

if so what are the pluses and minuses for them ?

It largely depends on the quality of your external effects vs. software effects and the quality of your soundcard/converters. If you have high-quality external effects and good conversion, routing through them might be good. If not, you're adding additional digital-analog-digital conversion, which may degrade your sound more than the effects improve it.
