What exaclty is effect in and out and what is the difference between them? I am going through my cubase turtorial and these terms are confusing and not explained, help is appreciated thanks a lot

effect in/out is the input and ouput on the effect. As opposed to send/return which refers to the out/in on the mixer/recorder section.

thanks for the reply but im still a little confused on the difference between them and how they are used in cubase, and what is effect send and return? Hopefully someone replies, or possibly a link because ive got some recording to do on a deadline, thanks guys

I don't use Cubase so I don't know exactly how it works, but I junplugged explained it.

Effects send indicates you are sending a signal (vocal, guitar, whatever) from a device (say - a mixer) to an effects unit. This would go into the input of the effects unit. The output of the effects unit would then connect to the effects return of the "mixer".

At a most basic level you are sending a sound to the effects unit to be changed in some way (say, adding reverb) and then sending that changed sound back. Most of these types of configuration "blend" the effected sound with the original "dry" signal, thus allowing you to determine how much "effect" you use.

What I've just described is a basic hardware configuration (a mixer with an exteral effects unit) - however, in a software application (such as Cubase) the theory remains the same but the signal routing simply remains inside the software.

^he hit the nail on the head (as did junplugged really)

imagine it being like this.....

-->source sound-->mixer (hardware/software--cubase for example)-->effect send-->effect-->effect return-->mixer (hardware/software--cubase for example)

it is a "loop" in a sense, which is why it can be called the effects loop.
