I'm kind of new to Cubase, so this might be a dumb question, I'm working with Cubase sx/sl and I was wondering how to send a Delay effect during a certain time and not thourghout the whole track? if anyone can help that would be great, Thanks

You could split your track at the given times making seperate sections, and then process that part to have the delay you want. Im not sure if thats the best way though....

Setup the effect on an FX Track. Then bus the signal from whatever track you'd like to the FX track. Then use Automation.

To elaborate on what bigwillz is saying:

-Create an FX Channel (or Group Channel)

-Setup your delay plugin in one of the insert slots on this newly created channel (When creating an FX Channel, this will be done automatically).

-Now setup the delay to your setting of choice.

-Now on the channel(s) you want to use the delay, create a send to the appropriate FX Channel, activate the send and adjust the level.

-Now create a new automation lane for the track that you are working with, and select the respective send-slot/bypass function as the controller to edit.

This method is handy for creating a Delay that could be shared by many tracks.

If the delay is to be used on only one track, simply put it in an insert slot on the track you want effected, and create a new automation lane for that tracks insert-slot/bypass function.

If you are only be going to using an effect in certain spots, you can also create automation moves to bypass the actual effect processor (via its own track in project window). This can help preserve on CPU when the effect is not being used. But use the first method, to "Control" the effect, as using this second method could chop off delay/reverb tails etc.

Consult your manual for more info on setting up automation.

Beginners input only but I'd suggest that if you really want to learn this program, I'd follow the steps laid out by bigwillz24 & Atterion. However, if an easy method is what you're looking for, the suggestion by desiwrx02 is the way you want to go.

Determine what area of the track you wish to apply the effect, use your split tool to split at the beginning point of your effect and end point. If you're splitting a midi track however make certain that the downbeat is on beginning of your split point because if it's not and the note is straggling the split line, you will lose that note once you split it.

After you split that section, left click that area to highlight it and then right click the access your effects menu. Goto Plugins and select which effect you want to use.

You can at that point even preview what the effect will sound like before you apply it.

Agreed, and best to use the snap function for that, but you can also set Cubase to duplicate any notes that are split over more than one clip, so that way they can appear in the original clip and the new clip after the split. You gain unnecassary data this way, but when your finished with your edits you can always merge the clips and remove duplicates via the MIDI menu.

Doesn't SX/SL have automation? Just automate the delay.

I tried that and I didn't get the results I was hoping for. During a playback, I determined that I wanted this one small section of my guitar solo to have a different effect from what was available in my plugins, so during 'WRITE' mode I enabled the effect then disabled it when the solo was done.

Then I re-played the song in 'READ' mode and at the point where the effect should have come on, it didn't happen.

I guess I need to read more on this ..

You can do it that way but it is easier if you have the effect on all the time and automate the send level. You can edit this graphicly which makes it easier.

Yes .. of course that would work just great .. didn't think about that but it wasn't something that was really bothering me a lot. I'm trying to get deeper into the areas of Cubase that I haven't tackled as yet. I suppose if you pay all this money you should at least learn as much as possible before you start complaining about what it can and can not do.
