I am having some issues with effects concerning my guitar set up.

I want to record rock music, and will be upgrading my guitar set up in the future to Line 6 equipment, but that's not for a while. For now, I have almost nothing effect wise for my guitar. So my question is as such:

Am I better off recording a clean guitar, then once it's in PA9, I effect it then to add the distortion or other sound effects that I would like, or recording the gutiar with the 1 stomp box effect that I have? I have already done a recording with the stomp box, and I hate it. (Note, I pretty much hate it anyway, but it's all that I have right now.)

My largest problem right now, is that I don't know how to comfortably use the the effects that come with PA9. Because of that, it seems like the built in effects are not sufficient for me. I'd like to know if there are good plug-ins that I could get, or if there is another program altogether that I'd be better off getting, that could do nothing other than apply effects to my guitar, once it's recorded.

As far as the effects that I'm looking for, I guess that I can't really say. I don't know. I just know that I want much more than what I'm limited to right now with what I have.

If the answer to my question is that Cakewalk should be enough for what I want, (at least until the Line 6 is here) then, are there some sort of patch libraries, (ala Line 6's website, or Digitech's, etc.) where I can see what settings are for different sounds?

There's a bunch of questions sandwiched in there, I know. ;) Hopefully, I've kept them close enough together that one or 2 answers should be enough for all of them.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am totally prepared to hear that I'm screwed until my new amp needs are met. It's something that I'm pretty much used to by now. lol. So, if that's the case, don't be afraid to say it. At least that way, I won't bother racking my brain for some way to make something sound better, when it's just impossible.

There's always better plugins (and a bunch of freeware can be found at www.directxfiles.com), but in this case I would look at the source. Your guitar is better of with some real amplification (mic up an amplifier) or use a amp.simulator (such as V-Amp 2 or POD).

There's also software amp.simulators that you can use (ReValver and Amplitube springs to mind), but you really should have Sonar for them (especially ReValver, since it works as a DXi).

The bottom-line is. Distored guitar will sound crappy if you don't run it through some kind of amplifier (and that goes for whatever distortion you are using). I see you have discovered the Cakewalk Amp Sim, but this really is a baaaad plugin.

Hope this helps!

Helps a bunch, thanks. ;) It's pretty much what I figured. I'll just have to wait, and make do with what I've got for now, I guess. I just hope I don't go crazy waiting to save up for it. hehe. ;)

Thanks, mosk.
