I'm wondering if effects like making my voice echo, reapeat, or different room effects can be done in software realtime, or software not in realtime etc...or only with an effects processor, or is it best to be done with external gear of somesort, or to get a preamp that can do this?
An example of what I'm talking about is without an ad lib, as it hits one of my words as I'm dropping my lyrics to go back after and make it so when I say the particular word it echos or repeats.
I'm checking back posts on this site now...If I get my answer solved I'll post it, but if you can help me, please!

P.S. I'm not talking about compression or EQ or anything like that, just strictly effects...

They're out there...but you gotta have a pretty fast CPU to keep up with such a program.

To answer one of your questions in another post "what is delay?", what you described above is one type of delay (repeats and echos). Also, delay can be used to line up tracks that don't line up right, for example if you use two mics to record one instrument (say a guitar cab), you place one mic right at the speaker and have the other several feet back to pick up some of the "room" sound. Now, if you are working digitally (or have a delay unit) you can delay the "close mic", to line up with the "room mic", so that they both get the sound at the exact same time. So usually when someone is talking about "dalaying a track" to make it line up, this is what they are talking about and not adding the repeat/echo. Well that maybe a bad analogy but hopefully you got the point of all that babbling. :D

Yes there are, and most (if not all) of the software recording programs come with effect plug-ins, and a lot of them also have realtime capabilies.

I hope that helps

Do you know any names of these programs...?
There's waaaaay to many to name them all, but Waves is one of the best (and most expensive) and makes some real top-of-the-line effects plug-ins. (see link below) :)

Also, try a search and you should come up with a whole mess of them.

as far as processing power goes, PTLE runs fine with plenty of plugins on my Athlon Thunderbird 800
