effects on vocals...

Can effects on vocals be done by software, or do they need to be done through a digital reverb or something to that degree?
What if I only wanna have effects on certain words or adlibs, or make a certain word echo, what would I have to do...edit it in a multitracking software? Sorry for all the posts, this board seems to be the most popular and I'm impatient.

They can be done in software...for just doing certain bits, you would highlight the portion with the mouse and process just that portion....cant be more specific until I know which multitrack software and/or editor you use.....
