Effects good for Mastering/Mixing?

If I want to clean up my mix, what are the most useful effects to do this with? (compression, eq). I have serioius problems with vocal highs being to loud, certain drums standing out, and overall noise in the backround.

The best place to deal with these kinds of problems will be while you are tracking the parts.

thats the problem. I can't tell whether to use a limiter, compression, or eq. I don't know if Compression would be the most useful or not. I'm trying to get a solid unit to connect to the computer that won't lag it up that could compress the parts before getting to the computer.
