Effects/compression for Tascam 424 MK3

My son has a Tascam 424 MK III and has been mumbling something about "better sound" and "effects". Is there a device that provides both compression and effects or are these typically two pieces of equipment? I'd be interested in recommendations - he records his metal band in the garage or basement and also creates a lot of tunes where he plays all the instruments himself.
