OK, I have a stupid question...if I'm not using any effects, should I have the Effects knobs turned all the way to the left? After playing around with the playback of my tape, when I turned it hard left, it sounded SO much better; I got rid of a lot of the unwanted hiss and noise. Am I doing the right thing?

It sounds like you're learning a lot from hands-on experience... I think you know the answer. Learn to trust your ears.

Yes. When effects are not being used, the knobs should be turned hard left. When you add effects later, turn the knob to the right until the desired amount of effect is added.

Probably a Tascam, no doubt. Full left is 0 gain, nothing goes in then nothing goes out. Peg Left.

El Bartolemus: the reason I asked which multi-track you're using (guess I assumed it would be one of the Tascam models since we're in that part of the site) is because I'm using a 414. I've been leaving the effect send knobbers set in the middle position for no other reason than several of the other controls have a detent at that position. If turning those babies all the way to the left, thereby shutting them off and eliminating gain and associated noise, reduces the hiss on my recordings, I will be extemely grateful to you for asking the question. Sheesh! and thanks.

It should reduce the noise. Turn them hard left if you're not using effects. The 424 also has dbx, which reduces the hiss greatly. I don't think the 414 does...not sure though.
