I'm thinking about buying some studio monitors(Wharfdales)but I'm concerned about the low volumes I tend to work at(most of my recording is done at night when the wife and tots are asleep.)For one,I've read that low volume more than high volume damages speakers .I'm also concerned that low volume will negate the benefit of quality monitors.Any advice appreciated!

Maybe that was "driving the speakers hard with an under-powered amp"?

On nice thing about listening at low levels is it makes you notice low level stuff that might be missing or hiding too far in the background of the mix.

Could be!I wonder if that would be a non issue w/ active monitors?

Low volumes won't hurt your speakers as far as what I know of speakers. Better speakers though will have a more cohesive sound at lower volumes and won't change as much as you move through the different amplitudes. Rooms however can certainly change the sound of your monitors at different volumes.
