Anyone have direct experience with either the Edirol PCR-50 or the M-Audio Radium 61?

I'm looking for a midi controller/keyboard and I'm torn between these two models. Both seem to have decent reviews, and the Radium 61 (more keys) is even cheaper than the Edirol PCR-50 ($199 vs $229). I'd like to use USB as the midi interface if possible, and I believe the M-Audio supports this-- not sure about the Edirol.

I'm looking to spend between $150-$250, so any other midi controller recommendations in this price range are welcome.

Thanks.

I have a Radium49, and I like it. It does what I need it to do and did'nt cost much. It may not be as nice as an Edirol, but until I learn how to actually play piano/keys instead of just sequencing with it, the Radium will do just fine. And it was only $150 brand new.

Peace.

Do you happen to use a pedal (expression/sustain) with your Radium?

And, what sequencer or software are you using it with?

Thanks!

I don't use a sustain pedal at this point, but will in the future.
I use Cakewalk recording software, Edirol VSC and Dreamstation that came with it, Synth1 and TriangleII.
I may be switching to Cubase in the near future to be able to use VSTI synths though.

I hope this helps!

Peace.

I tried one wrapper, but it did'nt seem to work with XP or something was corrupted. I don't really want to spend alot of money on a wrapper program right now, so if you know of some inexpensive ones or, better yet, free ones, let me know.

Peace.

Hey MadMinute-

Do you find the 49 keys limiting at all? I'm not a pro pianist, but I can bang out some simple two-handed-ten-fingered piano parts. I'm mostly plan to use the midi keyboard as a controller (to input drum tracks, piano/synth tracks, etc) so 49 keys might cover this, but don't want to run into situations where I regret NOT shelling out the extra $50 bucks for the extra 12 keys.

I'm using FLStudio with Sampletank 2 XL and BFD (drum sampler). All pretty good, powerful software, so now I need to invest in some decent hardware.

Any thoughts?

I think I would have liked the extra keys, but for what I do, which is all recording into Cakewalk, the 49 key is fine. Its easy enough to push a button and move the octave up or down, and I have plenty of space for multiple tracks on my hard drive. So, as far as it being limiting for me, I'd say no. But it may be different for you. If you think you may need the extra keys, then by all means buy the bigger one. The key count is the only difference between the two boards, besides the layout of the controls, so if one fits your needs better than the other, get it.

The thing does work pretty nicely though. I certainly have no complaints.

Peace.
