Went into my local music store to pick up some monitors. I was planning on getting a set of Yorkville YSM1p's as they seemed to be pretty good for the price when I listened to them before. Anyway, the guy that helped me was pretty cool and seemed very knowledgable... from what I gathered at least. He told me all the pros and cons of each pair and everything he said seemed to match up identically with everything I've read on here about every different brand and model he showed me (yes, I've been reading for far too long about monitors). Then he shows me these little Edirol MA-20D monitors. Now admittedly I know these aren't supposed to be any good, but he showed me a variety of different CDs through them and demonstrated how to make them relatively flat sounding (which, obviously isn't amazing for $275 Canadian) but they sounded pretty good.

I'll get to the point: They were on sale so I ordered a pair. Now, I know these aren't a great brand and I've read all the threads I could find on the board about them. Anyone tried them out? Basically I'm just going to use them to mix acoustic guitar & vox. Think they'll work out well enough until I get a better set? Or should I just not bother, cancel the order and get the Yorkvilles like I had originally planned?

Sorry for the excessive message length.

I'd go straight for the Yorkivilles, it'll just save you time and money in the long run. If your strapped for cash there's a few used pairs I've seen floating around T.O. Prolly be able to get em for $350-450. ;)

I use a pair of Edirol MA-10 monitors. Small things, so as to be expected, absolutelly not enough bass (I'd be surpriced if anything below 80hz gets through at all), but on the otherall, I do like them. Big hump in the low mids/high lows, but they were 130 euros a pair, can't beat that. Very usable for your standard home recording mixing stuff. Just make sure you don't use ONLY these.

Yeah, the Edirol's might make an 2nd monitor choice for checking mixes, but for your main monitors go for the Yorkvilles. For that purpose the Edirols are a waste of your money. I also wonder about that salesman turning you away from a better monitor you were willing to pay for, toward a low end monitor that won't get the job done as your main monitor speakers. In my opinion his advice is pretty suspect.

Yeah, I was a little curious about this too. Who knows what his motivations were. Thanks to everyone for the reassurance that my doubts weren't totally unfounded.
