He's singing through a C1000 - aside from his singing style, is this what's getting that distortion-like quality? Kind of lo-fi... or is it something other than the mic i.e. the recorder?

I doubt that any distortion is coming from the C-1000. More than likely it's either the mic preamp or a stomp box or plugin or....

Yeah I did think it could be a stomp box...he says he uses it for the 'nice top end' - dunno if that would contribute or not

I'll wager his miming to a pre-recorded, pre-mixed track so all bets are off as to whether he even used a C1000 for the vocals.

That said, the C1000 can be incredibly harsh...but usually more in the higher frequencies rather than the vocal range.

Not that long ago, I did my first vocal recordings with that mic. I didn't like the harsh ringy sound as I was actually singing, but the playbacks were good. I was surprized how something so harsh sounding to track could sound so different once down on tape {and it was tape }.

C-1000's aren't so bad. They aren't the first thing I grab for sources that you'd use an SDC on but they are my fav for rack toms or congas.

Ha well I just 'accidentally' bid on and won one on ebay...so I guess I'll find out!
