ECM8000 or Samson C02?

Out of these two pencil condensor mics which do you think would be better for overheads for a drumkit?

I am aware the ECM8000 isn't actually a microphone for recording, but is a signal detector for PAs or something, but I've heard it works well??

The ECM8000 is $50 each
The Samson C02 is $119 for a pair ($59.50 each)

I've never heard a samson mic that was pleasing to my ears. I'd go with the ECM8000 all day long. I own a pair and they are very neutral sounding.
 
I own and use the c02's. They work just fine. Ive used them for overhead and have even played around with them for vox and guitar...I was able to get them on ebay for 79 dollars new!
 
Well the behringer is a measurement mic, and i've read that it's a little noisy when used elsewhere. Samson like Behringer seem to be hated among people here. I've never had any personal experience of their equipment, but wil be buying a couple of their mics for my studio in the future. What's you budget, 'cause you might find you can afford a mic(pair)suited for this task that will work a lot better than either of these?
 
well this is as high as I really have the budget for.

You see im 13 years old and I'm just using these mics to record my drums for some tracks for my band. It's nothing very serious.
 
What else are you recording? What equipment do you have? What mics? Recording Live or separate? Please fill us in on as much as you can about what your setup is, what you have, how much total you have to spend, etc. Even though it isn't that serious, I'm sure you wanna get the best results from what you've got/for as little $ as you can. We can(try and)help you there.
 
ill also be recording guitar/bass/vocals.

im gonna be recording seperate

i have no equiment now (except for a philips mic that i've decided sounds good on my snare), im doing the research before buying.

im looking at the mg10/2 mixer
either one of the two condensor sets ive mentioned in this thread
perhaps an audix f9 kick drum mic
and the philips mic on the snare

to tell to what kinda quality im looking at - is that im happy with the sound i can get from the bass/guitar with just the philips mic. The drums is the problem.

PLEASE DONT RECCOMEND ME THE MARSHALL MXL MICS I'VE SEEN RECOMMENDED IN EVERY SINGLE THREAD ASKING ABOUT OTHER CONDENSOR MICS - I CANT GET THEM HERE IN THE UAE AND ITS EXTREMLY HARD TO ORDER ONLINE! ;)
 
What is your total budget for all equipment? Would you prefer to record multitrack? I certainly would. Not sure how cheaply you could do it but I'll look.
 
I posted here last night. You might wanna consider my suggestion. The total price for the preamps and 4 input pci card is $177 + p&p. I know it's more expensive than the Yamaha, but it allows for multitracking. Also once you buy a new sound card such as the m-audio 2496 for the Yamaha you end up at almost the same price. Sorry if you don't want this but i just get carried away in my suggestions for people, lol. You could get 2 Studio Projects B1s(great mic)for overheads here for $190, which could also be used for vocals and guitars. You could DI the bass along with the bass mic. Where are you from?

Thanks alot for your help but could you please tell me, out of these TWO mics which you think would be better. Not because i like the look of them or something stupid, but because of availablily here in the United Arab Emirates... (I'm from Ireland by the way)

Also, what do you mean by multitracking? You mean recording all the instruments sepretly and mixing them together? Yes, thats what I'm doing...

also I havent really decided on a budget, but i'm decided on everything else im getting, except for these overheads
 
Get the ECM8000. It is the best $40 mic you will find.

I have used them on drum o/h, guitar cabs and room mics with good results.

Where's the United Arab Emirates? Multitracking is where you get each separate track onto the comptuer so you have more control. Like track1 kick, track2 snare, etc, instead of track1 drums, track2 guitar. When multitracking you don't need to worry about getting the right levels during recording, but with the Yamaha desk you were looking at you will.

Well it's alright, thanks for your interest, but I'm not on much of a budget so i'll just settle with fixing the levels pre recording.

just a little fun at your expense, it's tough but i guarantee it happens to us all.
 
I have a pair of ECM8000s and for $50 each they're pretty good. The biggest problem I've had with them is they're omni so they tend to pick up the echo off the walls more then I expected when I first used them which makes placement a little difficult. They also have tiny diaphams which I usually find makes them a bit difficult to place even without having to worry about the echo. If you do get the placement right I'd say they would be about the best you're going to get for the money.

The C02s are cardiod and would be easier to use in hostile acoustic environments. I've never used CO2s, but I've used a C01 and thought it was one of the worst "general purpose" mic's I've ever heard. It sounded ok when I used it to pick up cymbals and close miced everything else on the kit. I've never heard voices that didn't suck through a C01.

By the way, it wasn;t me who gave you negative rep. I'm not that kinda guy..i dnt kno how to do it, lol. Nah i wouldn't do it anyway unless it was something serious. I know I'm an idiot :p Geography ain't a strong point of mine
