Echo Layla or Motu 2408?

Has anybody had experience with the Echo Layla yet? I have a Mackie SDR24/96 Hard Disk recorder and use Samplitude software. I want to be able to edit a few tracks from the Mackie in my PC. I have both tower and laptop. Which would be better?

I have a mate with the mackie 24/96 with a couple of Echo cards in his comp. Layla & Darla I believe plus his onboard sound running too. No synch problems. He says my mixes are crisper with my Delta 1010 but personaly I can't pick out the difference.
 
Thanks. Since I'm an old Analog guy, this digital stuff is all new to me but I'm one old dog willing to learn from you young pups.
 
I use a 2408 with a HD24. I couldn't be happier.

I use this combo and it is flawless
 
Please excuse my limited knowledge in this area. I assume you use the light pipes to trasfer from like a Mackie SDR24/96 or some other HD system? And have you ever heard of Broadcast wav files? bwav? Mackie support team says that is the type of file their machine stores.
 
I use Lightpipe for transfers so whatever form audio is stored in the recorder is irrelevant. The MOTU comes equiped with Lightpipe and TDIF (24 channels worth) of I/O so you'd be ready to cable up out of the box.

Your choice of laptop versus desktop depends on your needs and the power of each computer. If you need a portable recording rig or you don't have much space, a laptop might be appropriate if it has the drive speed, RAM, storage space, etc. required for digital audio. Check out your laptop's specs, estimate you expected trackcount/bit depth/sampling frequency/etc, and see if the notebook will work. Also, if you go with a PCMIA card setup, check to make sure your laptop has the appropriate cardbus. If space/portability are not that important, I would go with the desktop--but, again, look at your recording requirments compared to your PC specs.

If you are inclined towards the MOTU, check out the MOTU user's group forum (Unicornation.com). There are quite a few posts regarding the 2408, including discussions on compatability issues, etc. Look especially at the MOTU Hardware Forum.
 
Laptop vs Desktop

I have a Sager 2.4 Gig Pentium IV with 1 gig of memory. The HD runs at 5400 rpm. Is that a problem? I'm running WindowsXP Pro.
 
5400 RPM drives are pretty poor at high track counts. 7200 is way mo' betta.
 
I'd go as far as say for 16+ tracks ATA 133 with 8meg cache

I looked on EBay yesterday for 7200rpm laptop drives and found none. Any ideas?
