Flailing up a storm.
I impulsively bid on a listing on ebay for a "gibson SG" color cherry, etc. I noticed it shortly before the auction ended and got it for a price you never expect to see a real SG go for.
Sooooo, after the excitment, i take a look and it looks like the guy was selling a faded SG without mentioning the faded part in his description at all.

I already paid the paypal, because i like to be a good ebayer (dumb). I have emailed asking for a refund, to allow him to relist the guitar with a better description and call it no harm no foul. I've heard people here talk about disputing payments via Paypal, but i have never really had a problem.
Can someone give me the run down on how such a thing woudl work?

THanks,
Dave

I had one experience where I needed to get out of an ebay purchase. I contacted the seller and explained my dilema. He understood and was great about it. If the seller is willing to refund and relist that is the best scenario but if you have to dispute the listing as being inaccurate, that obviously means a process and possibly a wait.

One option is to resell it if you aren't satisfied with it. Could you come out on it?

I am hoping that the seller will understand where i am coming from, i ~should~ be able to get my money back if needed, but i dont; really want to go through all that if it isn't needed, and i would rather jsut put my $$ into the gear i DO want.
THanks for the input,
Daav

You can file a dispute through paypal. They will then have you attempt to resovle the problem through communication with the seller. If you cannot reach a resolution, you can file a claim. You have to file the dispute within 45 days of the transaction. The one thing that sucks-- I'm not sure if they have changed this, but last time I had a dispute, PayPal could only refund me the amount that the seller had in his PayPal account, which was only a fraction of what I paid. It may be different now; that was a few years ago

ouch!

that is bad! Most ebay sellers don't want to risk negative feedback so they will work with buyers but it may depend on the return policy he had on the listing. Hopefully he has a satisfaction guaranteed policy or a least some kind of return policy.

Will Paypal still take their cut even if the buyer and seller cancel the transaction? Something to consider.

Yeah, if he is willing to give me my $$ back, i would be willing to split paypal and the listing fees to make it go smoothly.

That is definitely the way to go if it is possible. I would always try to work it out with the seller before going through PayPal dispute. As mentioned above, most reputable sellers value their feedback score and will try to work with you. There are awlays a few that don't want to; in which case you can go the paypal dispute route

good luck daav

I hope things work out for ya daav. I know how you feel. (kinda) Let us know how it goes.

Are you saying that you bid on and payed for a guitar without even looking at the picture of it or asking any questions about it?

Well, yes I did bid impulsively, but not entirely blindly. I have a stock search for SGs:
gibson SG -epiphone -faded - special
that i use for browsing. Since i normally am only looking at the "real" SGs my guard was down. The pics do show some wood grain, and it has cresent inlays which i now know are normally from the early faded series, but didn't at that moment. I was excited about what appeared to be a great deal on a standard, and my mind was clouded.

I found it about 20 mins before then end of the action and bid well below what most SGs would normally go for, fully expectin to get out bid at the end, but thinking "if i get it for this, it would be great!". Since many others seem to be smarter than me, it went for quite a bit below my max bid actually. Boy would i be bent if it went for the max.

So I had tried to avoid this stuff, but wasn't vigilant enough.

The seller contacted me and said i should have been able to see from the pics, etc. I offered to cover his listing fees and pay pal fees to refund my cash with great feedback, we'll see what i get from that.

How much did the bid close out for and where can I see the photos?

Was it a Gibson SG? If it is an SG and has "Gibson" on the headstock, then I don't see where you have a case. Caveat emptor.

Yeah for those who are pointing out that the guy wan't being decieptful, and it was a buyer beware situation, i understand. I am hoping that he will be accomodating, but it isn;t like my hand was forced, or he actually claimed it was a standard.
Either way, i didn't get a horrible deal, and I should be abel to resell, i jsut got somehtign i didn't really want, and the wqhole thing could have been avoided if either he had specified in the listing, or i had done some research before getting all hot and bothered and bidding too fast.

Daav.

Well the update is that the guy says he will refund my cash minus the relisting and pay pal fees. Decent guy, he earns is positive feedback from me this time around.

Sounds like you got out of this in good shape. As a seller, I'd still be a little pissed that you didn't ask questions or read the listing more carefully. Now he has to go back through relisting and waiting another week. It could also mean that somebody that WAS interested missed their chance on what they thought was a good deal and may not be paying attention to the relisting next time around.

Personally, I've been on both ends of this situation. Not good either way. It just means you have to be more careful about understanding what your buying (and ask questions) or be very careful about your description/pics as a seller.

Chalk it up in the experience column. No harm, no foul.
