when facing the machine which side does the take up reel go on? also whats the cue switch do? should it be up or down. thanks.

Hi, the machine plays left to right, so the takeup reel goes on the right side. Cue should be down, or away from the heads - this switch will allow you to hear the tape as you ff or rewind, helping to find the point you're looking for. It can seriously accelerate head wear so you should just use it when you need it, and don't snap it all the way into place. Just hold it with your finger just enough to hear the tape rather than locking it on.

by the way, what kind of machine is it? did you just acquire it?

best of luck,
andrew

...see my answer in the other forum, and here's a tip - it's not a good idea to cross-post questions (tends to be a bit confusing, and wastes bandwidth...)

It's quite common to put the take up reel to the LEFT and then rewind the tape to the start before recording. After finishing recording, you again rweind the tape to the start, and then *play* (not fastforward) it to the end.

This is known as "tail out" winding. It minimizes the effects of print-through, and the playing of the tape (as opposed to rewinding or fast-forwarding) insures the tape is wound neatly and evenly, which is good for the tape.
