I'm sure this has been asked before but I didn't really know what to search for.

I want to be able to mic a drumkit and (preferably) run each mic into a mixer. I want to be able to run the mixer to my pc and have each channel go into a separate channel in my software. So the kick, snare, etc. would all come into Cubase or whatever into a separate channel.

From looking around I think I may need to use light pipe or s/pdif, is this correct? If this is what I need what kind of pc interface would I need to connect to the mixer?

Am I wasting my time and should I just get a soundcard with a bunch of inputs?

Yea, just get an interface with enough inputs. Consider looking into M-Audio 1010 or 1010lt.

Are those 1/4" analog inputs on the 1010lt? It's hard to tell from the picture but they look like RCA. I'm not sure how I'd plug a guitar or 1/4" mic cable into those, an adapter maybe?

yea, they are RCAs. The adapter should work as far as I know... somebody else needs to confirm that.

Also check out the Firepod if you are still interested. Doesn't get much easier than that.

I have never used the 1010 but I have a Terratec EWS88/MT and it has RCA inputs. I use the inserts on the back of my mixer as direct outs and i just use an eight channel snake that has 1/4" mono jacks on one end (inserted half way into the insert of the mixer) and the other end of the snake has RCA plugs for the soundcard.

RCA and 1/4" makes no difference.

It's just two wires and a metal shell.

You can get adapters at RadioShack.
