I just want to say that I love this mic so F*ckin' much, I cant stand myself!
I was looking for good overhead mics (a pair) and a mic that would record vocals and acoustic guit like crazy and I found the TC30K, and it kicks ass on everything (not electric bass). Everything recorded w/ them sound super real even on my stupid ADAT!
I highly reccomend them, and they are cool looking! And, the people at earthworks are really nice, they hooked me up w/ a matched pair and a nice wood box for about $700!
Someone slap me!

Ya! What he said.
I went with the qtc-1, and was real surprised at how bright and clear a "flat" mic can sound. I stick'm right behind the drummers shoulders (or there abouts) with some kick and snare mics... :)
(guess we got to watch out for that 10hz crap though!)
I kind of want to try their cardioid some time.
see ya

twonky, I've always been interested in Earthworks. I've got two questions though. First, what's your room like? I've heard that when using an omni, the room is *really* important. Second, why use stereo omnis? Because position in the room gives a different sound, right?

Hey Dobro,
As you may have already gathered from previous posts, I am a complete Earthworks mooney. But I only got that way after trying many other brands of mikes.
I have a pair of both the QTC1s (omni) and the SR71s (cardioid). I commonly track with both and then select the ones that sound best recorded. It seems like I invariably choose the QTC1s though. They are just a tad smoother on the top and fuller on the bottom.

My room is a classic example of a BAD ROOM, yet using the omnis lets me close mike such that the room becomes *almost* negligible in the final sound. Check the Earthworks page for their "omni usage guide". Everything they say is true.

You can hear the QTC1s at work on acoustic guitar at www.mp3.com/Rick_Daley

Right now, all the songs were done through a DMP2 preamp, but in about a week, new versions of the songs will also be available done through an earthworks LAB102 preamp. (I had to rerecord everything when I heard the new preamp !).

PS: Why use stereo omnis ?: The human ear/mind is incredibly perceptive at discerning subtle information from sound. A stereo pair gives a giagantic jump in perceived depth and realism EVEN IF THE PAIR IS ONLY SEPARATED BY 6" ! I did a lot of experimentation with mike setups. Now, I am back to the classic: 12th fret / behind the brige spacing; so that is another reason for using a pair. But even if you don't do that, a pair is still a huge advantage that simply cannot be simulated by tricks such as delay, overdub, chorus, etc.

Good Luck,
Rick

Thank you Mr/MS Axis

I coudnt have put it better myself.
My room sucks to. So If had really good room. JUST IMAGINE HOW GREAT THEY WOULD BE THEN!!!.
