Earthworks or Schoeps?

Hi,
I'm between a pair of Earthworks QTC1 Omni's or a pair of Schoeps CMC-6/MK2 Omni's. This is for recording a grand piano playing classical piano. I like the Earthworks price and specs, except for the noise level. The Schopes seems like the winner, but the price is hitting my limit. Thoughts?

Thanks folks, for all the great help! :(

Never mind, I'll probably buy a pair of Royer ribbons ...

I've heard the earthworks and was extremely impressed with their sound and quality. I haven't had the chance to hear any Schoepps.

You've probably hit the wrong message board. Most of us haven't used these mics because we have limited funds, which makes sense because this is homerecording.com. It's fine that you asked the question, but don't be a jerk when you don't get an answer.

From what I could see trolling through the archives, lots of people here have both Schopes and Earthworks, so I don't think it's a rare combination for the board.

As you say I probably hit the board at the wrong time, which is why I replied to my own message to bump it back up on this list. And I expressed unhappyness that nobody had anything to say. Sorry you don't appreciate that.

Contact Fletcher for advice at www.mercenary.com
He's a strong pro AE who tries out all the gear they sell.
You may also want to ask about the Josephson's (sic?)

The Josephson C42s (if that's what you're talking about Chris) are pretty bright and I wouldn't put them in the same category as the earthworks and Schoeps because aren't they purported to be really flat?

Before committing to one of these two mics, you should probably consider the other likely suspects in this quality range:

Microtech Gefell M296
Neumann 100 Series
Josephson Series 6
along with the Earthworks and Schoeps.

I use the Schoeps myself, but my application is somewhat different - solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar. You might be amazed with the Gefells.

For classical, go with the Schoeps. The Earthworks is a great mic, but it is noisy. The Schoeps also has a much smoother high end, which is important for classical.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned DPA (formerly B&K) for SD Omnis. definitely a notch above Earthworks, and one of the de facto standards for classical recording. Look here - http://www.dpamicrophones.com/

Yep, one of my absolute favorite mics, and not just for classical. The 4011 is my favorite mic for acoustic guitars. The 4006 is also an amazing mic, and used to use it frequently for a room mic on drums. But the Schoeps mics are at least as popular for classical, if not more so.
