i dunno if the title makes sense, but i'm basically looking for some reference audio files to help my recording ears get better. like being able to recognize a 1khz tone or knowing exactly how much a 4db boost sounds like or hearing the difference between filters and effects, stuff like that. i realize that most engineers just get this from experience, but there's got to be some kind of site that helps with that.

I think if you check at your local library and say that you're looking for exactly what you said above, and I think they will be able to find something for you. I know of at least one CD set (I think it's a bit pricey to buy - and I have no idea of the source or title!) that is designed to help train your ears for similar things - this set may include something like -
'now here's sample of white noise with low pass 4 pole cut at x Hz' or some such...

Download the demo of this program. I think it is a 7 day demo.

Also I have seen him selling the training on ebay for less.
I picked up one a year or so back for less than $20.00

Very good for the price. It is kind of like the Golden Ears training but computer based.

Another thing you can do is get a nice parametric eq, get some source material, and go nuts. Boost 1k. Heat what it sounds like. Boost 400Hz. Cut 400Hz. Just spent two hours a day doing it, eventually you'll hear a snare and think "that needs more 4k" or a whole mix and think "way too much low mid at 300Hz".
