Hey Guys,

Looking on thomann I just noticed theres about €15 in the difference of the sennheiser e604's and the Shure sm57's I'm planning on getting tom mics as a what if, (I normally use 4, sometimes 3 mics)

Now thing is, I have 2 57's so I'm familiar with them but have no access to the e604's to bench test them

so can anyone who has used them give me some pros AND cons to them vs a 57?
Pro's to encourage me that they might be worth it cons to prove you've road tested em and don't work for sennheiser,

Please and thanks,

Gaz

For live - I've found them extremely good - second only to my Audio-Technica ATM25 and ATM23.

But for the studio, they are clip ons and have the artifacts of clip on microphones. You can remove the clip though and use a stand.

I own and use both in live settings and cannot say I've noticed a significant sonic difference. On drums (or just about anything) they both work very well. The obvious advantage of the 604 is the lightweight and size which in a studio setting probably isn't as big a deal. IMO,both of these mics behave very similar.

While they are similar, the 604s tend to sound a little more like a 421, which works well for toms.

I use the 604s exclusively in the studio. Most of the time I even clip them on. It's good to not have to position a really long mic like a 57.

Wow thats a rather positive reply for them, I was told they're much muddier than the 57's tho, and that they sound completely different to a 421 but hell I'll try source 3 see what they're like then buy em :)

The midrange of the 604 is much higher than a 57, which mikes the 57 seem like it has less low end. The 604 has more of a frequency response that you need for toms. If the toms end up 'muddy', just add some high shelf and it will balance out. (unless the toms are tuned poorly)

While they're about $40 or 40% more (up here in Canada, anyway), if I was just a drummer I'd go with the e604 just because of the clips. You eventually get tired of the mic stand jungle, and those clips are just so easy to use. Now to mic a guitar cabinet, an e609 is basically an SM57. Having SM57's around is never a bad idea, but for drums exclusively, I try and avoid the mic stand maze as much as possible. I'm sure the e604 will sound fine, and if the capsule is even remotely close to the 421 (the MkII though, which isn't the old school 421), it'll work well on drums, and a few other instruments.

I prefer the e604's for toms. They are easier to position because they are small. They have a better bottom end (in my opinion) for toms. The SM 57 is a workhorse and will work well on a lot of different instruments but the e604's were designed to mic toms.

I'm telling ya - you should really check out the Audio-Technica ATM25 and ATM23!
