I'm looking to add another dynamic mic to my collection.

The dynamics I currently have are 57, 58, d112, RS tom mic.

I'm looking to add another mic mainly for electric guitar cabinet micing and drum uses (kick, tom, etc.)

It's between MD-421II or RE-20.

A lot of people like the RE-20 on kick, and others have mentioned the MD-421 on kick as well, but no one has mentioned the RE-20 on guitar cabs, would that work?

Thanks,
Brandon

Please tell me what category these two mics excel

Well to me the choice is a tough one.

The RE20 can work on kick, bass, and vocal. It is also a very impressive *looking* mic to have around. It is also an industry standard radio/broadcasting mic. $399

With that said, the MD421 can be used on just about everything. Guitar cab, toms, bass drum, bass guitar, vocals, and also for radio broadcast. The only annoying thing about it is the proprietary clip. If you break it you get to dish out 30 clams for a new one from Sennhieser. $200 - $300 on Ebay.

One more mic to think about is the Sennheiser 441U. It is a very nice mic and can be used for all the purposes mentioned for the MD421. $200 - 400 on Ebay.

Last but not least is the Beyer M88. A very nice mic IMO. It sounds very good on my voice. Not that I sing, but when I talk into it, I instantly sound like a Radio DJ. This mic could be used on just about anything an MD421 can be used on. I have gotten great bass sounds when I mic the cab. Also, I really like the way it sounds on MY voice. $150 - $250 on Ebay.

Hope this helps

good advice above.

let me add that the beyer m201 is also a great mic. use it anywhere you would use the 421. $175 or so on ebay. often less.

oh and the ev 635a is handy to have around. great on guitar cabs for a natural sound. $35 anywhere.

and speaking of ev the re16/re15 mics are very nice sounding and often $50 or less.

and i have this ev 408 that i use for an awful lot of stuff, even vocals. a very "exciting" sounding mic. peaky.

oh and sennheiser just dropped the price on the e609, or maybe it is just a cheaper version, but people love these.

The Sennheiser 421 MKII sounds like a prior model of 421 that has an exciter
thrown on it to make it sound brighter. Didn't work well on my voice as it
accentuated sibilance as a result.
The EV (N/D) 408 is a favorite vocal mike with Scott Dorsey BTW.

The Peavey PVM 520i LD dynamic is another excellent all round microphone
that usually goes for $125 or less on e-bay. Kind of in between the MD421
and 421 MKII in brightness-very "condenserlike".

just when i think i was on to something all by myself...

Eel, I know how you feel. :)

Thought I had "discovered" how vastly underated the Beyer M88 is until;

1) Learned it's Phil Collins' main live & studio vocal mike.
2) Found out that Bob Olhsson considers it to be both comparable
and similar in tone to a Neumann U87 for many singers-who's
had more experience with Neumann's than all of us put
together have or probably ever will...

I think the M88 is a fabulous mic (especially on kick drum), but it has a much heftier low end and more pronounced proximity effect than any U87 I ever heard. It wouldn't occur to me to describe it as similar to the U87, so I'm most curious as to EXACTLY what Bob O. said. If you wouldn't mind referencing the exact quote of Bob's, I would greatly appreciate it.

Not that I don't trust your paraphrasing, but it seems to leave out certain useful details that would explain what he was thinking...

LD, your instinct is right, go to www.gearslutz and check out the thread
"So Much Gear, So Little Money!" in Jules' forum of almost the same name.

It will be more beneficial to read the whole thing, however, page 2 was
where Bob O. went into more detail. My guess BTW would have been
the M88 sounds closer to a U89 in tone. I've done a fairly intense
research into vocal mikes, however, don't want to seem like a "know it all",
so that's why I reference things more now that have a top pro to back
things up, rather than leaving myself open to unwarranted criticism.
(this last comment has nothing to do with you specifically BTW)
