Hey guys,
Im looking for a dynamic mic that is good all around, for instruments and vocals. It doesnt have to be spectacular in any one area, just pretty good all around. My budget is $300-$400, and preferably something that doesnt need to be boosted a ton, like an sm57. Thank you! :)

Sennheiser 421. Good all around mic. Even better ,Sennheiser 441, more expensive though.
Beyer M88,also good on a lot of stuff.
Theres a lot of good dynamics.

EV RE-20.

Normally I'd recommend an SM7, but it does need some gain.

Others to consider would be Beyer M88 or a Sennheiser MD441.

Excellent assortment, all good, add the RE27 (and some of those lesser RE's but maybe not on vox so much...

Last year I took my vocalist to the music store and spent hours testing out mics to find on that sounded decent with her voice. After trying everything from $800 condenser vocal mics to standard Shure fare I wound up choosing the AKG D 890. I was immediately shocked by the output of this mic and how well it captured details. Since then I've also used it for micing guitar amps and a Hammond organ with fantastic results. Worth every penny of the $99 I paid for it.

It has a pretty pronounced peak around 2K. This could be a problem or a benefit. For my application it's a benefit. Pretty indestructible too.

I also would recommend SM7, but it does need a ton of gain. I have to also support Sennheiser MD421 in your price range. It's a proven workhorse. A third choice is Electrovoice RE20. MD441 is also an outstanding dynamic. You absolutely cannot go wrong with any of those four.-Richie

I own and use 57's, sm7, re20, 421, m88.

I would say the one that is most different from a 57 is the m88. I would say that the one I grab the mose is sm7 for anything male vocal or higher and RE20 for bass cabs and kicks.

All of those on the list are winners though.

Thanks for your help guys! Looks like it's going to be Sennheiser 421!

What about the sennheiser 935 I read they are really good in vocals and a lot cheaper.

The 935 is a perfectly good stage mic, and is good in the studio for snare, cabs, etc. The MD421 is a top of the line stage mic that is *better* on snare, cab, etc., and a fair vocal mic. You pays your money and makes your choice.
The 800 and 900 series mics are "OK". The 421 is a stage and studio standard.-Richie

@Richard thanks! I'm eyeing 935 just for live not for studio so I think 935 is worth looking. BTW good to know that 935 is good in snares and cab. :)

I carry an e835 to gigs with me, just in case something goes wrong with my SM7. If I had a 421, I'd take that.-Richie
