DYNAMIC for acoustic guitar

On the FAQ, the dynamics listed as good for acoustic are the sm57, Senn. 421, and Beyer M201. I've got the 57. Are the differences large enough between it and the other two to justify me getting one if my only concern is using it on your standard dreadnought acoustic guitar. I don't care how it sounds on vocals, I don't care if I can use it for toms, or drum OH, or anything else. Just acoustic.

I need a dynamic because of my crappy space, which I will not be able to rectify soon enough for my purposes.

Speaking of crappy, here's the current chain:

Behringer 1604 (that's the crappy part-hopefully soon to be DMP3 )==>Audiophile==>Reason v.1 (came w/the machine)/N-Tracks/Cakewalk Express(came with the midi controller)==>Tannoy Reveals (non-powered).

Would the 421 or M201 be a significant step up from the 57 on acoustic guitar only?

The 201 might be. Maybe a 441.

If your space is that crappy, why get another mic? Why not wait to spend the money on a better mic when you get a better space?

i've heard EV N/D468's (and their predecessors) be used to good success. i've got an RE38 and it does a fine job on my acoustic as well. i like my 603's better, but the RE38 would make do in a pinch.


mark, if you've got an extra 201 that you could slide my way in the traditional jskillz fashion, i'll be glad to take it off your hands.

The MD441 sounds good on acoustic guitar (if you like the dynamic, boxy sound) but you'd better have a dang good preamp. You need about 66db of quiet gain to really do it justice. I have to max out my RNP when recording acoustic with the 441 or the 57 and I get a little hiss up there.
