Dx-7

If you understand FM programming, go for it. Otherwise, it might give you a headache. If nothing else, it's a nice big (and heavy) velocity-sensitive keyboard. The outputs are 12-bit, which can be good if you want grainy digtal sounds, or bad if you want crisp clean FM tones. Programming the DX7 is a bitch, but there are a lot of books for it.

Considering that the Native Instruments FM7 (the DX7 softsynth, with a few more killer operators) goes for 100$ more, you might want to think about something a little more modern. Unlike an analog synth, the Yamaha DX series is all digital, and thus it is possible to easily recreate their sounds on a computer.

Yes ,I know,I have FM7,just wanted something more hardware-ish :).

You'll be slightly dissapointed with the DX7 after using FM7 first. FM7 sounds much cleaner and can do a LOT more soundwise than the DX7 did. For one FM7 has 32 types of waveforms and the DX7 only had 1 - the sine wave. If you want something more hardware-ish, look around for a Yamaha SY77. It will be slightly more expensive, but definetly worth it.

Do a search on "99 Flavors" by Chick Korea in your favorite file sharing program. He used the SY99 (SY77's bigger brother)extensively on tha tune. You'll get a good idea of some of its sounds. The only difference is between the two sound-wise was that the 99 had better EFX processors and would let the user import his/her own samples into RAM.

Of course, delete the MP3 and buy the album if you like it when you're done. :D

If you want a Dx7 there is no substitute for the originals. There are software editors that make programming a lot easier because FM synthesis is pretty screwy.

Personally, I perfer the Casio VZ series( http://www.steveandsally.freeserve.co.uk/casio/ ) when it comes to FM type sounds. They couldnt call it FM, because that belongs to yamaha, but it was pretty much the same thing. Only with diferant wave forms, and more algorithims. All in all it was a pretty cool synth, and they even made a guitar with one built into it. I wish I had never sold mine (I cant say the same about my DX-7 )
