I'm looking into purchasing a DVD recorder for my studio PC that will primarily be used to archive my audio data. I don't have a clue about the differences between +R and -R. Any recommendations about what works best and for decent/moderately priced drives? For example, I was just browsing through the Directron site and found Sony drives for about $52, which is appealing to me, but I don't want to regret whatever purchase I make.

My PC, by the way, is a home grown AMD Athlon 2500 running Windows 2000. I'm running 2 internal hard drives as well as a removable hard drive, and a CDRW drive (if it makes any difference).

Thanks,
Darryl.....

NEC http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152035

cheap, quiet, fast and reliable

The NEC drives are good and cheap.

Plextor are my favorite, but you pay through the nose for them.

Thanks, guys.

How about preferred media? What is the difference between +R and -R?

Darryl.....

-R is the more widely adopted standard and has better success in terms of playing burned movies on most DVD players. I think all drives support both, but currently dual layer is only available in +R format.

I usually get run of the mill name brand media (Verbatim, Imation, Maxell, etc...) and haven't had any problems with any particular brand. Just steer clear of the cheap shit.

Plextor 716... It's the only DVD recorder on the planet.

Thanks, John.

I just noticed in your tag that your location is Schaumberg/Hoffman Estates. I was just up there visiting Willow Creek Church last week. For a church tech guy that place is like paradise.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation.

Darryl.....

Dual layer dvdr drives are comming down in price now. I dont know how much the disks are at this time. you can fit twice as much data no them.

GET A -

thfis is very important, better still if it will write to both (as mine will)
but if you want to do anything with video EVER in the future, you'll want a -

although somewhat different, movies come on dual layer neg discs.
the +thing is only home user stuff.

Nope, you cannot assume that. The IT dept at my job ordered me a new Dell Precision Workstation and by default, it comes with a Philips DVD+R drive unless you say otherwise. I didn't realize what had happened until I tried burning a DVD with DVD-R media.
