dvd burner for backup

PC load letter?
I wanna build my new DAW with a dvd burner to back up my SONAR projects. I'd also like to have the ability to burn discs my dvd player can read, but thats not as important as the ability to handle the back-up task.

I really have no clue what the differences are between dvd+r, dvd-r and dvd-ram. I was looking at the sony dru-somthing, which is supposed to do all the formats but dvd-ram, is that a good option (its about $350)? Or do i need dvd-ram, once again, im pretty clueless :D so excuse my ignorance

you don't want dvd-ram, the discs look like this. As you can see, you can't use these discs in a standard dvd player. The most widely adopted formats seem to be dvd-r and dvd-rw. Oh, and another reason not to get the dvd-ram capabilities is the discs are more expensive than the dvd-r and dvd-rw discs.
 
DVD Ram is more of an industry standard for archiving projects but Below is right, they wont play on standard DVD drives. Your DVDR discs may not play on them either depending on your burning software and DVD player.

Are your .bun files so big that they don't fit on a CD-R?
 
I also have been eyeing a dvd burner, through firewire. The sony looks good, and there is a case out there that lets any internal burner, or HD become firewire. http://www.cooldrives.com/firen.html

This way, I could use it as a DVD burner for backing up and making digital video dvds or plug in a harddrive and use it for tracking on my laptop.

I have been working on editing and scoring my honeymoon video (keep ur minds out of the gutter ;) ). Digital video takes up about 1 gig for 5 minutes of video! I want to back these files up and make dvds. I backed up about half of it on 15 cd-roms. Not a fun task.

The sony looks like a good choice then, its also dot all around fast burning speeds also
 
The largest .BUN file I have is about 550 megs, which still fits on a CDR. Most of mine are about 300 megs. Of course you may be working on more elaborite stuff.
