so I've been fine with burning dvds (backup files, and some actual dvds that i've made, movies) for the past year or so that i've had the burner. Now, nothing seems to work. It will burn fine, but my drive won't read anything that has recently been burnt, at all! It won't even recognize a recently burnt DVDr in the drive.

I've been burning with the newest NERO (which is the same as always....).... same media...any idea? dvd burner gone bad?

Thanks

Scott

more on this...
reinstalled the adaptec ASPI drivers, still no help really.

I noticed that when I put one of these dics that I've burnt more recently into the drive, and I have My Computer open, it changes from

"DVD-RW Drive (D:)"

to

"CD Drive (D:)"

and the icon changes from a drive to a disc (cd/dvd). So windows knows there is something in there, but it just can't read at all what I have just burnt, I suppose.... I have no idea what to try or where to go from here, but I probably have about 15 dvd-r coasters right now. damnit. ha.

Attatched is nero infotool info for that drive...and everything else i suppose? ha.

make sure they will not work on any other system

get a head cleaner kit and try it.

try burning at 1x spead....burning a hour long dvd takes an hour.
if this does not work

I would uninstall nero

power down

remove the dvd

get some canned air and blow it out well. then, if you can take it to a friends house and try it on his (just unplug hiss, no need to take it out and plug in yours (don't forget the power plug)) if you can't see if you can run it by a comp repair place, ask how much to check FIRST, should not be much if you already have it out.

don't want to do the above? ok, put it back in.

ched the data connector to the motherboard, make sure it is in all the way on both sides (level) then put the dvd back in, don't forget the power.

reinstall nero...without the upgrade.

try burning at 1x, 2x, 4x and up to 8x if you have the media. media can make a big diff. also try reading them on diff machines.

if it still don't work, go to www.cdfreaks.com read the reviews and buy the one you think is right for you.

Every single CD RW drive I've had has died in just over a year. It won't recognize disks. So I got external last time usb 2.0 so I could use one w/ all the PC's I have and laptop that also has a dead cdrom drive. Well just over a year, and this one is also dead. But now since I can transfer data over the network between all the PC's, I'll jut go next with the cheaper internal drive and just put it on the fastest PC. These things have only 90 day warrantees, it's all crap. And forget about warantees anyway b/c you have to pack it up and ship it or bring it in and not see it for a while so go cheap and go often, they all break soon.

thanks guys. I'll try some of that stuff for sure.

the wierd thing is, one out of the 10 i've recently burnt works on a friend's dvd palyer (laptop), the rest go unrecognized completely. I'm kinda assuming now that it IS a hardware thing. here i go. thanks again though

well, i just ripped it apart and the usb interface looks like it's adapted to ide for the drive so maybe, maybe a normal ide drive will work in it, not sure....but also, my bad drive blinks a lot, and squeeks a bit and stops and blinks 2x and nada.

the Newegg LiteOn is a nice price, wtf, i'll try it. thanks for link.

I just hate to buy a new one, I got this burner when they were expensive, like $200. what a waste. ha.

Dont cry... the first CD burner I used (work) was $2500 and blank CDs were $25 EACH.

Burner was a 1x too and took a full 90minutes to burn a CD no matter how little data you put on it!!!

:-))

I had a 2x Memorex that still works. It was $330. I ordered the LiteOn.

i've been using the same sony cd burner for about 5 years and still no problems. i'd definately go with a sony again ... but my generic cd-rom drive just went dead a couple of days ago.

picked up a samsung from microcenter warehouse, 50 bucks. perfect so far.
