Thinking about getting UAD-1 cards and plug-ins and doing all compression, EQ, fx, in the box. Tell me why I shouldn't do this, other than the well known fact that the DSP chips they run on are a bit antiquated. Anyone?

'Cuz nothing says big-time-hit-making-rock-star studio like buttons and lights. Lots of buttons and lights!

(Oh yeah, and lava lamps. You're keeping that, aren't you?)

Ah yes, the brightly lit console. I know the chicks dig it, but my wife won't let me have chicks in the studio. Any other GOOD reasons.

And yeah, the lava lamp stays.

because the uad-1 drivers are icky, and the dsp isnt all that strong...most likely still giving you many more instances than your outboard, but still

As for sound, what outboard gear are you going to replace? If is low-end stuff like Behringer  , I would switch.

Also, what is your workflow? Do you want to do it all ITB or a hybrid?

well, it's not just that the dsp chips they use are a bit antiquated, but also the methods of interfacing-- pci, pci-e, and cardbus... it may not be a problem now, but it may be a problem on your next computer.
there are lots of native solutions to consider-- especially considering the increasingly ridiculous processor power available (hopefully motherboards will advance as well as to make use of all that power), and there are other dsp solutions like duende and liquid mix that use firewire.

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend the UAD. They are the best sounding plugs out there, and unless you have real outboard, they are the next best thing.

Also, UAD is famous for their support, so I suspect when the UAD-2 comes out, current UAD-1 customers will get quite an incentive to switch.

It would replace a low end Eq unit, three compressors, ART VLA, RNC, and DBX 162, as well as the delay, trem, chorus, etc. from pedals, and fender reverb. Into Mac dual core Intel then to Logic 8. Just seems like an easier way to get lots of good effects a lot cheaper than buying all the hardware versions. Neve, LA-2A, etc. way too expensive for the hardware versions.

If you do decide to sell off the compressors, give me a yell or post in the for sale forum.

My opinion - you will get far better results with a uad than with those compressors. Get a used Mackie version, and the 1176 and la2a come with it for free.

Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning UAD. Why do you say get a used Mackie version?

iirc the mackie version is pci only (mackie made the uad-1 first, then sold the product line to ua), so make sure that your dual core mac can use it (i.e. accept regular pci cards).

by all accounts the uad plugins sound great.

Good catch, I forgot about that. :o

Oh, and Guitar Zero - if you ever head up to Portland, you are welcome to come check out the UAD plugin's here at my place.

no problem :)

incidentally, i'm in a similar situation-- i am running logic 8 on a pimped out mac mini dual core. my main plugin bundle for compression and eq is urs classic console strip pro and i'm pretty amazed at how many instances i can run in a mix at one time and at the quality of the compression and eq emulations. i had a purple action compressor that i recently sold in order to help fund another nice pre (a lachapell 583s), because i prefer adding compression in the box. i still have a langevin dvc for some light limiting while tracking, but i figure any major squashing is best left to be done itb given the quality of plugs these days.

also, if you haven't gotten it already, get the free/donationware au version of massey tapehead-- "tapehead medium" and try it out on drum and mix buss-- awesome!
